Issues with SA issued Laptop and being home

Our son came home for Spring Break and has not gone back. Thoughtfully, he brought his SA issued laptop home....just in case. Turns out, good idea, he now has all his classes online. The only problem we are having is his laptop will not connect to or even find our home printers (which are networked wirelessly). Not being a computer "guru" after looking at it, we think the only way to connect it is "manually" as I am guessing his firewall does not allow anything not connected to the SA's network to connect. If any other parents have had this experience we would love to know how you overcame it. Right now, he cannot print out anything or scan anything to send back.

Adobe makes a phone app that takes really high quality scans and can turn written work into PDF! It then generates a shareable link. Might help as a good stop gap.

Our DS ‘21 has his SA laptop and it connects fine to our wireless printer. You will need to make sure they are both on the same wireless SSID and download the driver and software for your printer on their laptop. This can be found on the Printer manufacturer support site for that model. After installing everything, reboot and then try to add the printer. It should find it without issue.

I know our DS was having issues connecting to printer, he also downloaded (about 10$ bc it’s on my iCloud account) a scanner. He said it’s awesome. He also is now able to print as well but loves the scanner.

I would think there would be tech support? I know there is a lot of emphasis on Mids reaching out and leaning on others at USNA.

Have you tried connecting a USB Printer cable? Should solve all of your issues. You can buy them at any office supply store or even Walmart; Target etc. I have this same problem with my work issued laptops.

iPhone Notes will also do it.

You can use the Notes app to scan documents and add signatures on your iPhone or iPad.

I’ve used the Adobe app but like Genius Scan better. There are tutorials and you can find YoiTube videos. You have to have the iPhone Mail app set up and active.

It's just called "Adobe Scan." It's a black background with the blue Adobe A logo.

Our son has used a random free scanner app for a while now. He used it to upload cfa results among other items. On his phone, takes image of doc then emails to self. Converts to pdf.

Thank you all for the insight. DS is pretty adamant about not running this up his Chain of Command. He is not sure if he is allowed to change his firewall settings, but I know his SA printer is wireless and connects, but unfortunately it is in NY.. We will try the cable first, then get him whatever app for his phone he wants to make sure he can complete assignments. THANKS AGAIN!!!

Maybe there is some reason the following wouldn't work, but... why cant he save whatever he needs to print ad a PDF file to a USB drive and then carry that drive to a computer he can print from? Th iij s is from someone who has no knowledge of specifics of USMA systems.
