January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

I think some people are getting a little carried away by trying to calculate to the day when the status site will update. There is a set timeline or process, you could hear today or in three weeks time.

Florida is correct, you can't predict because you don't even know if they will meet that board.

Boards do 1st in 1st out. Unless you know their queue number you will not know if they even reviewed their application.

Being snoopy over the mailbox will not get the answer any faster.

Trust me as a parent, I get you want off the roller coaster, but also as a parent 3 yrs from now with or without a scholarship, this crap won't matter.

Come Aug/Sept as you drive away from their school and tears are flowing down your face, all you will want is 1 more dinner with them, 1 more shouting match of clean up that room or lower the volume on your tv.

You are wishing your life away and not enjoying what you have today.

Our DS is a jr in college, his entire sr yr I played the what ifs, worrying about scholarships, acceptance and rejection letters. I was absorbed into finding something that someone would say to read into as he got it. I missed sitting back and just enjoying where we were. I can't get that back.

Don't be me. Walk away, whatever will be, will be. It is all in the hands of fate now.

I know that sounds depressing, it really isn't, DS got the scholarship, he is happy at college and doing great, living life, in love, every dream for a parent.

I am just saying, I wish someone would have said to me, PIMA walk away and be with him..

It's good to remember that each branch of the service has different policies regarding the ROTC process.

The Air Force certainly stands alone in the whole process.

The Navy does not even publish the dates of their boards, they do however meet more frequently then the Army.

The Army has 3 boards and the dates are well known by now.

Regarding the AROTC, All cadidates that are board ready are seen by the board that meets. If they are not selected they are rolled over to the next board. It is my understanding that they do not use the first in first out method. If your board ready your application will be reviewed.

I don't think anyone is trying to calculate the exact date the status page will begin to change. On the first board it took exactly 3 weeks for the status to change, today is 3 weeks since the second board meet. It is only logical to think that a change could happen soon. I think 3 more weeks is a bit of a stretch.

Granted the second board will have many more applicants being reviewd then the first board so it would be understandable if it took a few days longer.

Pima, you gave great advise to just take a step back and enjoy the moment. I'm sure you will admit that's easier said then done. These are both exciting and stressful times for everyone waiting. We did finally back away from it after about 2 weeks, more out of frustration then anything. I have to admit though that we would at least check the status page each morning, we just agreed not to talk about it so much. The morning we saw his status change was exciting to say the least. I texted him at school and let him know, I don't think he stopped smiling the entire day, or the week for that matter. I truly hope that all of you here will have that same outcome soon. Even though my son is no longer waiting I find that I am just as excited to see the next round of awardees. We wish all of you good luck.

Every parent here wants the best for our kids, we all want to see that excited look on their face.

I admit I was one of those anxious parents but as I look back on it, I never missed a x-country meet, a boy scout outing, a vacation, or an oppertunity to spend time with my son. Granted there was always that cloud of anticipation hanging overhead but it was all part of the process we go through as parents.

Even when we cut the apron string we find it hard to let go of our end.

Someday....

And some of these candidates are going to meet each other and talk about using this forum, or usage by the parents. Told my DS about Ohiomom eating her broom from the pantry. DS said, "Why didn't you tell me that story sooner?" So interesting, just when I think I should withhold information he's asking for more. Love life with my kids.

Jcleppe, thanks for explaining about the differences in the way A/N/AF do things differently - I had no idea what Pima was talking about with 1st in/out...and usually I follow her posts easily. But I'm one of those people who really only reads Army threads since DS didn't apply to other branches. And yes, it took 3 weeks last board, and 3 weeks the 2 boards before that...so its a pattern if you read back in the threads. The whole DodMERB curve ball has been the first thing different going into this board, so they could change the rules at anytime - as I mentioned in my earlier post.

And no one is wishing their lives away here at my house....if anything this process has brought me and DS closer. Only he and I know exactly what this chance means to him. Luckily he also knows a few other paths to the goal now, so it will be what it is supposed to be.

Everyone else waiting for word....I'll be around later to see if anyone hears anything....take care:wiggle:

This is excellent and describes verbatim what we are experiencing. I am actually also using this experience to teach my son decisionmaking. There are so many variables that he can't control here that it is really an excellent laboratory for real life. For example, during his AFROTC interview, it was suggested (intentionally being passive here) that he should select an engineering major over biology to improve his chances. But I can't tell you how proud I was when he decided to stick with biology.

My DS is probably learning more through this experience than he ever did in a classroom. And "this process has brought me and DS closer."

Government,

In the past you were not sent a Dodmerb packet and did not have the Dodmerb exam until you were selected for a scholarship.

This year, after the first board had met and offers given out, for some unknown reason some candidates were sent a Dodmerb packet and directed to have their exams before the results of the next board.

The service academies send all qualified candidates to Dodmerb ahead of selection. This is the first time I've heard of ROTC doing the same thing. Some believe that this may be a sign of future acceptance, we really won't know until the offers start what the impact of this decision was.

The gut reaction would be...why send someone for the Dodmerb exam if they wern't going to be selected. Then again this is the Military and there will always be a mystery to the policies they put in place. All anyone can do is wait....not fun I know.

What is this Curve ball? sorry for the redundancy,

You are new to the system, but DodMerb end your military career before it even began.

The curve ball can be anything from allergies that you think are nothing to having a pin in your body from a broken bone.

DodMerb can be the make or break for many candidates. You may think your allergies are nothing, but it could mean months of fighting the system to get a waiver. That is the curve ball.

Took accutane for acne as a sr and you could be dq. Heart murmur and play FB in hs, can still be a dq for the military.

DQ waivers are not a given, 2 yrs ago they may have wived everyone, this yr they can determine not to waive anyone...i.e. curveball

I think the curve ball he was asking about regarding Dodmerb was in reference to the fact that some candidates have been given Dodmerb packets and directed to have their exams prior to being selected for the scholarship.

Of course your post was spot on regarding that other Dodmerb curve ball.

Yes, when Government quoted the curve ball comment I was referring to the AROTC break with "tradition" in sending non-offered candidates to DodMERB intead of having them wait until they were offered the scholarship. This January board was the first one since this change, perhaps they do not need to update the status site (the change we've been anticipating today) due to this change in proceedure. Also, the move from VA to KY happened during this time, so it could cause unanticipated delays in status updates. Heck, the wind may have decided to blow counter clockwise circles over KY and Ft. Knox has become OZ...... Dorthy and Toto better get to those computers and start inputting some much desired data.

This whole crazy process, flawed as it is, is the begininng of many of our DD/DS journey into adulthood. Embrace the insanity, laugh at the disappointments and dance on the day they finally do get their answer, this week, March or sometime in the future.

Life isn't about waiting for the storms to pass-its about learning to dance in the rain!:thumb:

Has anyone seen an updated status online??? I just checked the site and it says (and i quote):

"We apologize, we are experiencing some technical problems. Please call 1-800-750-7682, press option 5, then press option 2 and you will be connected to a processor who can assist you."

Anyone else getting this? The suspense is killing me. I heard last week that we should supposedly be seeing an update today so I decided not to check the site until today and I got this message. Perhaps it's a good sign though. I read that the same thing happened last board just before the statuses began to change. My theory is that they take all the statuses offline, update them, then put them back online.

Also, about a week ago, I recieved my Dodmerb in the mail. Another good sign perhaps???

I took two different kinds of acne medicine my sophomore and junior year but now it has cleared up. I also had a sinus infection this year. But, my biggest worry was that I wan honest about the Alcohol part. I had a small glass of wine on my 18th birthday. That's it.

Now I feel extremely worried.:bang:

Government,

I wouldn't worry too much about the alcohol question, they are looking for a pattern not a one time use.

Again, unless you have had a pattern of sinus infection problems, it should not be a big issue.

What kind of medication did you take for your acne, was it Acutane, this would probably be the only issue that would come up. Get your medical records together regarding the acne treatment and see your doctor to get a current evaluation. Have these records ready in case they disqualify you or ask for remedial information. This way you can send it to them right away and keep the process going quickly. Acutane can have some serious side effects that I have been told can be one of the reasons for a disqualification.

Go to the Dodmerb page and email Larry Mullen, he is leaving the baords soon,( he may have already) but try and contact him, if he is still around he would be the best person to help and advise you on how to be proactive regarding these issues.

Unfortunatly Dodmerb can be a long process and a bit frustrating, it's best to be prepared.

We honestly don't know if the Dodmerb paperwork is a good, great or indifferent sign. The Army has changed (starting with the October board) when it assigns some prospective cadets files for the physicals. The update status site could be down for no other reason than a true technical problem, Dodmerb recently was down for a few days I believe. Personally, I'm waiting to see if ClarksonsArmy posts anything about ROOs seeing something on their screens. Let us know if you get a change to the oh, so desireable "check your Dodmerb status..." on your update page:smile:

But, my biggest worry was that I wan honest about the Alcohol part. I had a small glass of wine on my 18th birthday. That's it.

As long as you havent been in trouble with the law regarding alcohol, don't worry about it. The Army isn't ignorant regarding underage drinking.

Change of status on ROTC website (?)

Hey gang,
I just checked my DS scholarship status on the ROTC website;

The status has now changed from "You've been selected for an interview... blah, blah, blah"
to
"We are having problems processing your request. Please call 1-800-750-7682, press option 5, then press option 2 and you will be connected to a processor who can assist you."

Of course we left a message!

What do you all make of this?
:bounce1::tank1::bounce1:

Grrrr.....

Me again.
I got SO excited, I just checked my DS status again.
It's now back to;
"You have been selected for an interview. Please contact the Professor of Military Science at the school of your choice. Blah, blah, blah"
:bang:
I have to say, I'm still curious. The 'Great Wizard behind the curtain' (Wizard of Oz quote) is doing something.... Perhaps?
