January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

I got this message: You may check your medical qualification status by visiting the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board DoDMERB WebSite... as well.... Can't help but be hopeful...

Congratulations, that is a very good message to get.

Looks like more offers are starting to come through now that the site is up again.

Just checked the website. No change in status. DS is bummed. Me too. Must be a "destiny" thing.

My son received the same message effective today. Is this an initial indication that he has received a scholarship? If so, what is the next message and how long does it normally take to replace the one above?

I understand it takes a few days to list your schools. Congrats, Independence!!!

Saw the first, and possibly only (although I hope not) offer on my list today. As I've said before, we have been told not to notify winners until it is confirmed that letters have gone out. Here is why this if very important this year...What I am seeing is that you may only get an offer to one school on your list. It may not be the school you are accepted to. It may take a couple days for Cadet Command to balance the books, and they may mistakenly post an offer and then have to change it. Once the letters go out there is no changing. Once you have that letter in your hand you have an offer that is contingent on you becoming fully qualified. I would hate to be the ROO that has to call one of his applicants and tell them that the phone call he made a couple days ago was in error, and he was wrong. Please be patient. I'll make sure to alert you all when the time is right, and then if you haven't heard from your ROO you can call and confirm or deny.

Son's status changed today. List of schools in order of preference:

Notre Dame
Michigan
Penn State
Clemson
Indiana

Good luck to those still waiting.

The other funny thing about this whole process is that the DODMERB website has been down for about 6 weeks, and no one has been able to tell us if or when it will be back up. I'm wondering if Cadet Command thought about that as they send out the standard "check your DODMERB status" message. Sometimes I just shake my head.

Clarksonarmy...I have heard that the next board is March 8, however , DS's ROO said the next time they will be looking at his app will be Feb 28. Do you know exactly when the next board will meet?

Always a welcome voice of reason.

A lot seems to have changed from the first board where there were many offers to multiple schools, my son had offers to 5 schools. Do you feel they are trying to limit the scholarships to more State Schools in an effort to limit the budget costs, makes sense if they are. I guess it won't be known until the schools for this board are listed.

We waited with tempered excitement for the letter to arrive, our level of excitement went way up when he received it in the mail. Then of course came dodmerb and more waiting, luckily he was qualified the first go around.

Remember for those who receive an offer and have not been through dodmerb, you'll have to hold your breath for awhile longer.

Clarksonarmy, it appears from what you are saying that an applicant can list only East Coast schools in his/her application but receive an AROTC scholarship to the University of Hawaii????? I have tried very hard not to complain about the ROTC process, but I really think the standards need to be much more transparent and clearly set forth in the future, so applicants can conform their aspirations to the rules of the game. Right now, we've got a bunch of folks comparing notes on a private website to figure this all out.

My DS listed only "tier 1" schools on his list (i.e., top 20 schools from US News). I expect he got slammed for that approach, because CC probably just thought he was some rich kid looking for a free ticket without any real ambition to serve.

Next year, if you happen to be in one of the meetings with CC, you may want to urge them to rethink things. The parents and DS/DDs of the Class of 2016 will thank you.

No need to respond (I'm just venting). We understand that you are in a difficult position and have an official status in this game. But thank you so much for what you do for your cadets at Clarkson and what you do for us here on SAF. I am going to have my DD look very closely at Clarkson in a couple of years.

And thank you for serving.

EDIT: clarkson, I misread your post. You said "only one on the list" not "one not on your list". Sorry.

Feb 28 is the deadline to have everything in for the last board. I think the board meets first week in March (too lazy to open up CCIMS right now and find the spreadsheet with the dates). Either way, as long as everything is in by the 28 you will be part of the next marathon thread waiting for the results of the last board.

.

Based on your description of your son, I would find it hard to believe anyone would come to a conclusion like that. Your son has incredible stats worthy of the schools he listed. The fact that he received an appointment to West Point only confirms his ambition, dedication, and commitment.

You have to admit, with all the snow and cold, Hawaii does sound good right about now.

?

Have all the status that are going to change changed, or will more change in the next couple of days? Nothing new on my status page:/

I'm a current ROTC scholarship applicant and I'm wondering if anyone knows for sure whether the status's changed today will be the only awards for this board?

I'm a former S-3, Battalion XO, and the current Battalion Commander in JROTC with a 4.5 weighted GPA (2nd in Graduating class) I was also the Adjutant General candidate for the Fed's at Boys State this past summer.

My Top 5 Schools were
1. Presbyterian College
2. Clemson
3. Wofford
4. Duke
5. UNC Chapel Hill

I wondering if the fact I picked a private school for my #1 affected my competitiveness for the scholarship....getting really nervous.

No Problem. :shake: I am a realist in that my DS may not get one Patent, but that does not mean his goal won't be realized eventually. So if that means he has to take another route, then it was meant to be.(should have studied harder for the SATS). Your Son has absolute stellar stats. I believe you will be hearing good things :thumb:
By the way he told us he has made his school choice.(Rat Mass won out over Rookdom) Which means he is willing to turn down a scholarship

Thank you, Jcleppe. I took a look at DS's application, and it does look pretty "uppity" on its face. I don't think CC knows that my DS has applied to and been accepted to USMA, but they do know he received 200/200 on his interview. But there's a wildcard 350 points that comes from the board. Ugh.

Here's his list of schools for AROTC:

Dartmouth
Princeton
Cornell
Stanford
Brown
Yale
Harvard

Each of these are on par with USMA. My DS is actually getting more and more motivated about USMA by the day!!! He is preparing for Beast Barracks every day and even dragged me out for a five-miler tonight (yes, I'm about to die).

When I said this may be a "destiny" thing, I meant that the signs are pointing more and more to USMA, with blinking with audible siren noises everywhere! Actually, I can't wait to change my title from "parent" to "Proud Parent of a ______ Cadet"

I told my DS early in this process to pursue every opportunity aggressively, because you don't know which doors will open and which will close. But it is still discouraging whenever doors close. He is about to write off ROTC at this point.

Also, as an attorney you'll appreciate this, but yesterday I was nominated to a major position within the ABA (which explains why I am so involved with matters pending in Congress). This is something I'm been working for my entire legal career of almost 20 years. So actually, life is good!!!
