January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

Talk about a roller coaster ride!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fellow Parents: I desperately need advice right now. If I text my DS and he gets suspended from school for using cell phone in school, will this hurt his chances of gaining admission to an SA????

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go up to the school. For something like this they should be willing to pull him out of class and bring him to the office so you can tell him. Don't you want to see his face upon hearing the news after all of this?!!!!

Congrats to all of you...for the others remember it takes time to input all of those SS numbers.

changed status

My DD status changed, school choices in order are:

St. Leo's University
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
University of West Florida
University of North Florida
Florida International University
University of Tampa
Embry-Riddle (prescott, az)

Our top 2 are private schools, so it will be interesting to see where the scholarship comes from, really crossing our fingers for St. Leo.

Keeping my fingers crossed for all the other hopefuls. Thank you for this forum, it has been my sanity.

Is there any intelligent guess as to when all the updates might be done being made? I know in the past it has happened sporadically with no real pattern. Is it all supposed to be done within a single business day?

No pattern. Mom's got your back, promise.

PM me if you want.

Just got back from an emotional moment with my DS at the high-school attendance office. I timed the meeting, so that he would be informed to meet me as soon as the class period ended and it was time to move to another class. Thank you all for the advice on this.

I'm not getting much work done today. Normally, I'm very good at multi-tasking (i.e., checking SAF from my blackberry while handling other matters). But today is different.

Congrats to all who have heard!!!! :thumb::thumb::thumb:

P.S. The elephants in the room right now are: (1) which school does AROTC want my DS to attend; and (2) will he be admitted to that school??? More waiting . .. . . Ugh.

Yea...what a great moment to share! Congrats to you and DS! Now..get back to work. (just kidding):smile:

Thinking I may need to make an emergency visit to school too. Not with good news, but to apologize for treating him like a "baby". He posted here rather than email me or PM me....right now Mom is probably not top of his list. I knew it was a risk, normally he doesn't get open computer access until 1:45-2pm, and he comes home by 3 so now I feel like an ass for letting him find out at school. Not one of my better judgement calls.

You've had a heck of a week and you were just trying to left some of the burden off his shoulders like a good mom. Don't question your judgement not to have said anything to him.
The day is early and I'm sure they haven't finished updating things. It's hard to keep the faith and nothing that anyone can say can help with the stress that you and your son are under waiting for something so important to his future but keep the faith.

Tonight, sit with a nice big glass of wine or two or three or whatever else you enjoy. You deserve it!

CJS, thank you. Had to leave house last night - couldn't look at him and lie - had a few glasses with a good friend. I can wait until whenever, just worry for him - you all know what I mean, its our job to worry sometimes. He has a lot going on today at school(assignments/quizzes)so hoping this doesn't throw him off his game. Oh well, can't change it so we'll work thru it.

I agree with cjs.

One day he will understand...when we left the hospital with them, they didn't give us a handbook for days like this.

I am sure he gets the fact your heart was always in the right place.

We are rooting for you, Ohio, and everyone else who hasn't heard yet!!!!!

Folks: If for some reason things do not turn out as expected from the January Board, remind your DS/DDs that 90% of the applicants may get wonderful news once the budget situation clears up (at least that is my current understanding). Unfortunately, we are at a complete void of knowledge how things really work at CC right now, so publishing stats does not seem to mean the same thing that it might for, say, SA candidates (this is very frustrating, indeed). As far as I can tell, there is no indication that the Army is drastically cutting the officer pipeline for the Class of 2015 (proposed USMA budget is down only 5% for FY2012). This board is likely an anomaly and a sign that CC is being overly cautious. In March, it will be much easier to know which school accepts or rejects your DS/DD, so you will have time to amend the school choice list before any CC letters go out. I know it doesn't ease the pain of waiting, but this may actually be a blessing! I expect that many of us will get rejected at the school(s) that CC has selected for our DS/DD, rendering the AROTC scholarship offer worthless (unless DS/DD is able to transfer). Ugh!

This chapter is FAR from being completed.

Thanks all of you for the encouragement. DS will understand someday.

Yes, the chapter is far from over, but lets get back to celebrating those with good news - Patentesq, so glad you went to school to deliver the good news in person. We don't get too many moments like that with our kiddos:biggrin:.

I know there will be more good news, we just have to hang tight.:thumb:

@Ohioparent... I am right there with you. My DS asked yesterday if I had heard anything and I simply said "No"...sort of a white lie. He doesn't logon here, so he won't know until I tell him.

I am so happy for all those getting the status change message. I have already checked numerous times this morning, but have been trying to convince myself not to check again until 'later'. The waiting is so hard. All the things running through my head that I must not have done right to get him a good position on the list. His stats aren't as strong as others here, but he is a great kid and so focused on the Army. The Army decision has shaped him into a different kid over the last few months...he is maturing and every thought is related to "'when I am in the Army". We are very proud of the young man he is becoming. The scholarship offer doesn't change where he is headed, I guess for me I see it as a validation from CC and/or the Battalion that they recognize what a great catch he will be for them.
Okay, I am rambling, but I needed to get some of this out of my head...no one here to discuss this with; so I lean on the shoulder of my SAF friends :frown:
