January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

I am just curious, if you don't mind me asking, what schools did you originally list on your application.. Which schools did they offer the scholarships. Have you spoken with the ROO's at the schools you listed, are they all full. Was the scholarship you applied for a Nursing Option.

It would be nice to have some more information for others that might see this happening to them. We saw this happening last year during the final board to a few applicants.

I originally listed Auburn, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, George Mason University, and James Madison University. I have proof I submitted this in November in writing. Somehow, CC would up thinking I had Auburn, Old Dominion University, Louisiana State University, George Mason University, West Virginia, and JMU. I have NO remote interest in LSU or ODU and never have expressed interest in either. I'm very confused how these got on the list.

I've been offered full scholarship to either ODU or LSU. Since I didn't apply to either of these, this is a huge problem. When I called ODU to try to figure this out, he told me I ranked extremely high on this board.

I spoke with Auburn, GMU, WVU, ODU, and Cadet Command personnel today and am meeting with the ROO at GMU to hopefully work something out. I was told Auburn doesn't have a "mission to produce Army nurses," but WVU does and is not full. So, yes, to answer your question, I applied for nursing.

I was told by CC to wait for my letter next week and immediately send in my letter of intent, accepting to LSU, and attach a letter requesting to transfer the scholarship to WVU and include my letter of acceptance.

Hopefully this works out.

Sounds like you are taking all the right steps.

I must say I am very impressed with how you have researched this and found the best path to correct the situation, WVU will be lucky to have you.

Good luck

There is no black and white answer on this. If both schools are in the same brigade it is a much easier process. It the school you wish to transfer to is more expensive then it is a very difficult process.

If you have a letter from the school showing that you were not accepted you would be in a much better bargaining position.

If I were to take a screenshot of the online status for the college would it still be acceptable? I'm not sure if I ever received an actual letter from the school. And what do you think of this situation; accepted to the school that I wish to transfer the scholarship to, not in the same brigade but less expensive by a few thousand dollars?

It seems odd to me that if CC is willing to at least entertain the possibility of transferring the scholarship to another school, they would have given the candidates at least two choices given that their were still openings at the schools. IDK... DS got a 4 yr. at his first choice, at least it was his first choice until about three weeks ago. He changed the order of his schools, but got the original first choice. Now trying hard to decide whether he will apply for a transfer. Accepted and slots are available. Either way he will need to make a decision, but it just makes things complicated.

If your son changed the order of school list 3 weeks ago, that would have been about 4 weeks after the Jan. board met. The list would have been changed by CC if he were rolled over to the final board. The application and order of schools are locked in about a week before the board meets, the only thing the board would see is the school list that was on the application at the time of the board.

Tranferring is an option as long as he is accepted to the school and the school he wants to transfer to is not more expensive, if it is then it gets dicey at best.

I sure understand the frustration, you think you will have a couple choices so you don't think too much about finalizing your decision on which school to attend. It was a lot easier with the first board, my son had 5 schools to choose from, didn't make the decision any easier but at least there were options.

ffrail has a good post a ways back that shows how they are handling the situation.

Good luck, I hope everything turns out for your son.

Also, congratulations to your son as well.

...it is...yeah, I know only adds to the drama.

and thanks for the good wishes! He's going to go to a great college, I'm sure of that. The details will work out. I'm sure of that too.

Transfer AROTC Scholarship

My son was able to transfer his AROTC scholarship awarded in the first board. He accepted one of the initial school choices and waited to get confirmation of the scholarship acceptance on status page. Then he emailed and snail mailed CC requesting a transfer along with a copy of the acceptance letter to transfer school. He was in contact with PMS from transfer school who said they would also inform CC of their concurrence. Requested transfer late Jan and received email confirmation of transfer from CC by mid Feb. Status page also shows scholarship to transfer request school. Good luck to everyone who needs a transfer, hope it goes as smoothly for you as it did for my son.

Timing

What is the time frame to see a status change? Are they all done at once, or does it take a few days to get everyone notified online? I see lot's of people getting notified. If we haven't seen a change by now, does that mean a decline?

There is one more board,,,March 8th. So you could be rolled over until the next board. Hang in there.

Changes began on Thursday, 24Feb and ended sometime over the weekend. So, yes, if you have not seen a change in your online status you have been declined for the January board. The March board will meet on the 8th and release results sometime before May 1st, we hope. There will be a thread started around the 8th for that board. Feel free to join us and learn as we do what is going to happen with the board.

Take care.

March 2

Good morning everyone.

The January board thread seems to be slowing down now that the results have been released. I guess the work on the index will begin soon-I've got a plan, so its in progress. I may PM some of you to confirm your DD/DS's intentions/school choice, even if it is to say trying for a transfer to ____________University.

We've all learned a lot this past 2 months, about the Army, online support forums and our kids. I wouldn't change a thing(well, except my son's status if I could:wink:). But even that has a reason, just have to see why and where it leads him.

Let us know about those letters - I can't begin to cook up March board speculation until I have some dates to work with:yllol::thumb:

A little reading material for all of you.

Thank you for taking this on, Ohio. Two other lessons we've learned on this thread:

1. It appears that clerical mistakes may have been made in connection with some applicants' school choices. This happens; people aren't perfect. Thus, it is wise for future applicants to confirm their school choices via email to CC a couple of weeks after submitting the application. This way, there will be less drama if DS/DD receives an award to a school to which they have not applied.

2. Applicants should avoid listing a school on the AROTC application to which they have not applied, unless they know they are planning to apply in the near future. This will be less of problem for the October board awardees, because there is still time to apply to a school to which they have not yet applied. However, for the January and March boards, this can become very problematic.

To add onto patentesq's post.

Anyone ever associated with the military (any branch) will tell you clerical issues happen. This is why what we have pounded into our DS's cranium to the level we have this one point:

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ASK TO REVIEW YOUR RECORD BEFORE YOU GO TO A BOARD!

I cannot tell you how many officers who I have met that went up for O4/O5 that didn't do this, only not to make the promotion list AND than have to request to meet the board for defending why they should be looked at again.

I can say that I don't have enough fingers and toes to count. I can also say that not one of them got picked up.

The biggest mistake is you trust them to have the correct info and data. 5 minutes of your life reviewing can make a world of difference.

Everyone must be hearing from their schools by now on which scholarship their kids got. DS was told today that it was a 4 year AROTC. He's happy but wants to go see the campus on Friday since it wasn't his first pick school. Go figure. So we called and have a tour set up along with an AROTC tour. The school seemed very accommodating to set up a tour on "not a tour date". Could it be they want him to pick their school? Oh well, good luck to everyone else! We have a call into ERAU to see if they have any openings for a switch but if not it looks like he's going Rutgers Univ. Anyone else get picked up for RU?

Has anyone received a written AROTC offer letter from CC yet? If so, what is the date of the letter and how many days do folks have to accept/decline?

DD also was notified that she recieved scholarship for school #2. Her school #1 was a private school; school #2, public-in state. We had heard that scholarship allocations might be shifting from private schools to public schools to save $. Anyone think this shift really happened in January Board?

My DD received a 3 year to a Private in-state school (her #1 choice) so not sure about the shift.
