Since we're sharing; I'm at Holloman AFB - Cyber Transport troop. I have my fingers crossed that our competition was thin. I heard the rumors that there's always some enlisted slots that go unfilled. But that doesn't necessarily mean there wasn't enough applicants. Just that USAFA may have only deemed a handful of them worthy of receiving an appointment.
The nervous wait continues...
Here is what I have gathered... Are there slots that go unfilled every year? Absolutely.
Now, that is only like a quarter of the question/problem in my opinion. There were 72 slots filled last year in total (out of an available 170.. which can be expanded if need be). Why do these slots go unfilled? Is it due to lack of
qualified applicants or is it due to lack of applicants,
period? This is less black & white. Generally, from Googling/reading/asking, the general consensus is that if you have a pulse, you can pretty much get into the prep school no problem. Here, I would say that there is a lack of applicants. I know of a guy that got in with zero awards, 3 LOCs and a PT failure.
Now, what about Direct Entry? This is where it gets interesting. Here, I would say there is a lack of
qualified applicants. You pretty much have to be on-par with civilians that get accepted. I have heard different accounts from different people on how many Direct Entry Airmen get in each year. Unfortunately the class demographics don't break out the number that is Direct/Prep Enlisted. The lowest I have heard is around 5, and the highest I have heard is like 17. I don't remember where I saw it, but I read somewhere that there were like 15-17 Direct Entry LEAD Airmen that got in last year, which is obviously on the high end of things. I find it really hard to imagine that there are that few Airmen applying each year. Sure, it's low.. but 5 applicants in a year? No Way. I know of a guy who was pretty much golden except for ACT scores/GPA that got denied. Letters of Recommendation from Sq CC, Wg CC, and Speaker of the House. Firewall 5s, and 90+ on all PT tests. He had a 3.25 GPA and a 23 ACT. This dude even had an AFAM & an AFCM. Still denied.
Bottom Line: GPA/ACT/SAT is what matters most. They already assume you're a great Airman. The
real question is how heavily weighed the essays/LoRs are.
