Leadership Options?

Hello, I am back at it again asking questions as I begin looking into applying. So I feel like my grades are pretty solid for applying, maybe a few B's in classes I should've gotten A's in, but anyway I have a few questions regarding leadership, a place that I am worried may hurt my application.

So something I have on my application so far is that I attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, which was a weekend-long leadership camp. I was nominated by my guidance counselor, and was one of only 4 in my entire school to be nominated.

Next, I work as a counselor at a day camp. Not sure if this will count as a valid leadership position (IMO it is, but not sure what the Academy would think). During the summer, I also am part of a two man sailing team. I am the "skipper" of my boat, so could that be counted as a leadership role?

So next up is something that I started planning with one of my friends, and will most likely present to my school's activities council this September. That is to create a "Movember" Club in my school where we would host events throughout November to raise money for the Movember Foundation. (My friends and I have a weird obsession with growing facial hair, so we wanted to do something with that) We are thinking about having T-Shirt sales, Bake sales, and maybe a fundraiser concert if we can get enough support.

In terms of sports, I am going to be a junior, and only Seniors will be captains, but I am a member of varsity golf, swim, and lacrosse. I am hoping to be captain in at least one, but I cannot guarantee anything. I am also planning on running for school board representative for school next year, which would be a nice addition if I am fortunate to be elected. There are a few other clubs I am a member of that I may become an officer for, but will not know until around this time next year. I am also talking to my guidance counselor about potentially attending Boy's State, and I plan on applying for NASS.

But besides this, is there anything else I should pursue? I understand that you should not participate in things for the sole reason of beefing up my resume. I enjoy doing things related to sports, especially lacrosse and sailing, so maybe volunteering at a lacrosse tournament or a sailing regatta? Again, I am pretty new to looking into applying, so I may be very naive. Thanks.

Focus on quality over quantity, and on impact over titles. You only need to do a few extracurriculars, the ones you’re most passionate about. Then, solve a problem or address an issue or tackle a challenge — something that shows your leadership attributes.

Your Movember initiative seems like a great starting point. Use it to demonstrate to the academies and nomination panels — whether in essays or in interviews — that you truly led the way.

You have several good things on here. Team captain is big. Also remember it’s not title, but actions that really means leadership. That is what will give you the challenge and growth that will help make your interviews and essays stand out.

Hello, thanks for the reply. What are some examples of actions over titles. Every year my swim coach gives out a leadership award, and all people on the team are eligible except for the captains, so would this be something that falls under that category? Thanks

When I interview candidates as a BGO I ask them lots of questions about leadership... what have they learned from success and failure, what they would do different, how has it pushed them. When a candidate holds titles such a President and Captain I don’t care about them doing the job description. Holding a student council meeting is part of the job. I want to know how they executed something that was unpopular, how they set the example. It’s the actions, not the titles that matter. The titles get you points for the WCS, but it’s not what will make you stand out in your essays or interviews. If you win a leadership award great. What was it that made you stand out?

> I think you answer your own question..perhaps unknowingly. Look back at the persons who have been selected for this award ? What made them stand out to be selected for the award ? The point is that merely being appointed to a leadership role doesn't make you a leader --its what you accomplish while in that role that is important.

So for an example that relates to me, would I maybe talking about the time I was the skipper of a boat I helped lead to a top five finish in my region? Or about the time I helped the kids at my sailing camp after our boat's mast fell down?

If those experiences are the best examples of you demonstrating leadership (that is, having a positive impact in the face of challenges), then by all means use them. Academies want to know that you leave a positive legacy — that’s leadership.
