Hey all,
I left rotc a year ago as a scholarship cadet. I no longer go to the school either as I have transferred. Recently, I have been getting emails and contacts from the old unit about my cac card that I was issued a year ago. They said I need to turn it back in to them. I live far away from the school, they are out of state and they said I need to turn it to them in person.
I was never told to turn the cac card back in once I left and the other people who left too were not contacted about the cac card issue but me. I don’t mind turning the card back in but I’m don’t have time to go back to that school to turn in a cac card. Besides, I was told the cac card can be turned into the nearest Military facility. Can I get into trouble just for a cac card? I’m also aware the cac is dod property but telling me to go all the way back to the school to give this card back is ridiculous when there is a military base closer by.

So I don’t have to turn it in to the rotc unit? Just a military base close?

If you have a military base close - use the link above to find the right place on the base.

Or, you could mail it to the address listed above. Either way, inform the ROTC unit as a professional courtesy.

That's what I would likely do.

They are insisting that I turn it in back to the unit. Not to any other military base. I don’t have time nor the resources to go to another state to turn it back in.

Your old unit is full of crap. You can turn it back into a military base. I don’t understand why they would want you to go all the way back just for a card.

If you do mail it, I wouldnt just use put in an envelope with a stamp on it. I dont know if you can send it Fedex or UPS (would be my first choice), but If it has to be sent with USPS, send it certified, with a return receipt and tracking number on it. As a CPA who works with the IRS, if you cant prove you mailed it, it never got mailed

I would mail it but I live closer to a military base, what I don’t understand is why they are insisting me that I turn it into the old unit instead of a military base closer by which is legal.

Technically you are supposed to turn it in but as I’ve mentioned multiple times, it dosent have to be back at your old unit. Let them know that you dont have the time or resources for that. I’m sure they would understand.

Probably nothing. When my brother left the military he never turned it in and nothings happened even though technically you are supposed to turn it in.

The card is not useful to you. It is also no longer functional. I'm not sure why you'd want to keep it.

Honestly, you are quickly becoming the center of your own drama.

I provided the solutions for you above: Turn it in to the local base, or mail it - pretty simple really.

Never said I was going to keep it. I’m going to turn it in, the ISSUE is they want me to turn it in back to the old unit. Meaning that even if I turned it into a military base, they would still want it back.

I expect, but do not know, that someone at the unit is trying to cover their butt.

Drop it off at any military complex, recruiter or even the nearest mailbox and move on. They will know what to do with it and the military will be thankful they don't have to deal with all the drama you're bringing to the table.

They brought the drama onto themselves. Im turning it in just don’t want to get in trouble or anything. Had they told me this once I left I would have turned it in on the spot.

Op was just asking what to do with cac card, don’t see how you think he’s bringing the drama to himself.

What part of turn it in anywhere didn't you understand? The drama is all on you at this point. It's not rocket science.

And he was asking a what if question. Doesnt mean he was going to go through with it. Just wondered what would happen if he didnt return it.
