Let’s speculate

And again, as stated as nauseam, no rumors. While well intended offers to share information, only consider those directly from the source. When USNA knows, those affected will know.

These are unprecedented times. Absolutely no way to even fathom a guess based upon other situations. May as well throw in doing plebe summer on your own, at home. Who knows??

At some point they need to get the brigade back to clean and vacate rooms. DS has a pile of dirty laundry fermenting in his closet. They did clean out the wardroom fridges before spring break but there is food spoiling in rooms.

I am hopeful COVID is starting to slow down. The recent COVID data/modeling coming out of IHME looks promising. There are signs that show we will be on the downslope of curve later this month. Hopefully that is the case and another two months of adequate social distancing after that will put society back in some slight resemblance of “normal”. Albeit somewhat of a long shot, there is hope of I-Day on 25 June. (Although I’m guessing that would happen with Plebes only - no families - and after some sort of testing). As a Dad of 2024 and absolutely no military background, maybe I’m wearing my rosie colored glasses.

Generally, yes. But the name of the thread is "Let's speculate" not "Does anyone know the status?" Collectively contemplating what the options are and what their impact might be seems benign as long as it is clearly labelled as such.

I missed the original thread title. You are correct.

I am guessing USNA is looking at all options. Starting on time with a full summer. Possibly No family at I Day. Making the summer shorter. How do you screen everyone, should everyone be screened.

To make that happen USNA has to get the Brigade back and graduate the Class of 2020. They then have to get the uppperclass ready to train the 4/C regiment. I think all options are on the table at this point. You will learn this term... semper Gumby... embrace it. Whatever happens will become a part of your classes identity.

They could. I would be surprised by that one as some kids haven’t finished school yet. Although the school year isn’t the same right now either. There is no play back or SOP to look at for this one... this is all new for everyone.

So quarantine them after you've put all of them together, and do so in double and triple rooms? ( Unless they turn classroom space to dorms). And you need to feed them three squares a day without bringing them into contact with one another? Doesnt make a lot of sense to me.

What about bringing them in waves starting end of May? I'm sure there are enough dorm rooms to bring in a limited number, separate them for two weeks, move them together once cleared, then bring in the next wave and so on. This is pretty drastic, and parents would obviously not be included, but desperate times....:(

The Brigade will have just returned (and that is still a maybe). They will figure it all out. I am sure the first guidance that will be given is for the Brigade and specifically graduation first. I know USNA wants to make the right call on that and it’s just so tough. A month later and it would probably be an easier call to make.

So hard to contemplate as the military directs more and more mitigation’s: how to wear a face mask in uniform. Cancelling Great Lakes grad ceremonies. Enforcing social distancing (what does that even look like plebe summer). Shortening basic training (Air Force) and some pieces of basic (BEAST week). How’s do we ‘get back to normal’ in general life? And how does that look for all schools? Let alone a SA...dorms! Hard to fathom! BUT, it’s a HIGH priority. One of 3 mentioned specifically.

I’ve read the NSI is cancelled for NROTC. That they will do it the following summer. Could plebe summer run in a different form during the AC year? Could it be done the following summer 🤷‍♀️?

Stay tuned....

NSI is peanuts compared to plebe summer. Each unit has run their own orientation in the past and can do so again.... probably on time in August.

They can push dates back. Plebe Summer more like Plebe...Autumn? Get the time back by cancelling summer training/leave next year and holding classes instead (if I remember correctly, minimum commissioning requirement for summer training is 1 fleet cruise during the four years). Professors are not an issue; PMPs and military instructors exist for this kind of flexibility.

Shorten sports period and add a class period. Saturday classes. Plenty of options to do more with less.

I'm sure if USNA can figure out how to graduate mids in three years back in WWII, they can figure this out. The end solution might not be a desirable one for mids and families, but the mission is commissioning officers. Everything else is secondary.

One rumor floating around, which I highly doubt will happen but is an interesting idea, was to spread out the 4/c Reg as much as possible by occupying most of Bancroft Hall (usually PS is just 4th and 6th wing), having each squad in a company separated, with TAD 2LTs and Ensigns taking on roles as senior detailers. Doubt it will happen, but would be fascinating. From what I understand, recent graduates used to be part of the Plebe Summer Staff, way back in the day. (Can any old goats confirm?)

In the mid 70's Plebe regiment had Wings 1, 3, 5, and 7. Plenty of TAD Ensigns around helping with the different teams and teaching on the 44 foot sailboats but they were not doing Plebe Detail as that was all 1/C Mids.
