Letter of Assurance in USMMA Portal

DS got one also. It means that as long as you are 3Q (academically, medically, and physically) qualified and you secure your nomination you will get an appointment. It's a great thing! Congratualtions!

My son's portal shows the application status as "Letter of Assurance." We have not had any correspondence from USMMA; what exactly does this mean?
I’m pretty sure a Letter of Assurance means that you are effectively accepted pending final details. Congrats

Beach mentioned a key point…”and you secure your nomination.” But congratulations to the OP (and others), you are all on your way to a potential exciting journey. From Admissions

“Letter of Assurance (LOA): A conditional offer that is contingent upon medical qualification, a passing CFA, and/or a congressional nomination.”

He passed his CFA and is DoDmerb qualified. He has his nomination interviews this weekend. Is the Nomination process for USMMA the same as for the other academies?

Yes similar process, but on the positive side, you can get a nomination from any congressman in your state. It’s not always understood by the offices, but if someone were coming late to the game and missed their congressman deadline, they have the ability to get a nomination from somebody else in their state. He should make sure he lets them know when he’s interviewing that he has that LOA. Congrats!

Our son received his just days before his overnight. It was great timing to really increase the importance of his visit. He had a solid visit and got to meet the football coaches and plebe players. Last step is to achieve a nomination. Best wishes to c/o 2029 applicants.

New to the forum....first post actually, but have relied on a ton of posts on here as we have navigated the application process with our DS this application cycle. Was curious if LOA's are fairly rare with USMMA and just reserved for the cream of the crop? Trying to be realistic with our kid on the competitiveness of the process. He has a high GPA, good fitness score, solid but not rockstar sports & community categories. I think his achilles will be his SAT scores currently, although he has a few more sittings. Right now we are focusing on his interview with congressional staff scheduled for Monday! Best of luck to all you going through this exciting but nerve-wracking process!

If you have read the many posts on LOA, you probably noticed the point is made that SAs can give LOAs for any reason, at any time, with or without conditions, during the cycle. Reasons might include a geographically under-represented area, something truly unique in the resume or other non-stat reasons. Think broadly and don’t look for one. Most midshipmen and cadets at SAs never received one. If one appears, great. Don’t spend any more mental energy on it.

My DS is a plebe right now. The process is stressful, but also rewarding in the long run. My DS never got a LOA and his SAT's were not off the charts, so like Capt MJ says, don't waste to much mental energy on the LOA. Just do the steps and make sure everything is complete. I also really recommend an overnight if you can. It will really put into perspective the whole regimental process if he hasn't been around the military much. Good luck to everyone!

Appreciate the response TrackDad. We are working to line up an overnight yet this fall. Agree, figure it will give him the best snapshot possible on what it is like as he heads into the home stretch of his application and testing.

DS class of ‘24 USNA but really had to think hard about the USMMA appointment. Our state parent club did an excellent job hosting an event for applicants and alumnus and current midshipman and their families.

USMMA offers a lot of unique opportunities. And to me, the hardest academic schedule considering the year at sea.

In his cycle USMMA was virtually silent. He heard nothing from admissions until the appointment showed up in his portal and our mailbox. An LOA never appeared or was floated as an option.

Don’t lose a second of time looking or hoping for an LOA from any SA.

Not to minimize the LOA, but WRONG BALL!

Of waaaay more importance, is beginning the DoDMERB process and getting an account or file opened. Unfortunately, this CANNOT be done by the applicant - the process is initiated by the school when they contact DoDMERB to upload the request to create an account - and it is not an exact or timely process. We applied to several academies specifically to get that ball rolling (it was the USCGA that hit in early October - ROTC also works, btw). Prior to January, they are typically slow, caseload-wise, and their turnaround time can be measured in hours, if not days. After December, it will takes weeks, if not MONTHS to get a reply - yes, they will be that backed up. You will see many here after the beginning of the year with a medical issue, under review or on hold, AGONIZING how slow the process is.

So, start early!

Just checked my son's portal and there is also an update of his status to say "Letter of Assurance". Woo hoo! Now we know that the DODMERB waiver process will start to move. In the meantime, we've already scheduled an appointment with a specialist to run the tests we know will be asked for.

Congratulations, that’s great.

Does anyone remember what it said on the application status before Letter of Assurance? Mine currently says ‘submitted’ - does it usually say something to show it’s under consideration after that point?

It varies. Sometimes it reads "submitted," sometimes "complete, and sometimes "hold." As long as your application is complete with admissions and with your MOC, enjoy your senior year in high school. Stay in shape, stay out of trouble, and expect an admissions decision by April. Anything earlier than that is a bonus. Good luck!

I don’t remember. It said either submitted or complete. I am wondering now if an actual letter or email will come? Anyone know? My son’s CFA is not even showing as complete. He did it a couple of weeks ago, but not sure it was submitted.

I don’t think you can get an LoA without passing CFA scores being submitted, so it must already have been put in. When did your son submit his application?

They are not showing as complete on his end but maybe they have them. I think he submitted the 12th or 19th of October.
