This is my second year applying and I just got a LOE in my portal. Today I went to my file and the LOE was not there anymore. Does anyone have experience with this?

Same thing happened to my son. He got it in portal two days ago authorizing an overnight visit and it is gone today. No idea what's up with that.

DS got one on Monday. Just checked & it’s still there. Maybe just a glitch or maybe y’all have something better headed your way?

Doesn’t matter if it disappeared. An LOE’s purpose is to encourage you to complete your application. That’s it. It means nothing more. So don’t worry about it, because it’s presence on the portal means nothing else. If you’re interested in still attending USMA, finish your application.

DS’s application is finished and he’s medically qualified. It’s specifically to authorize an overnight; no mention of finishing anything.

The LOE authorizes an overnight visit which is beneficial. It’s not meaningless.

Son received countless texts and emails after completing his app for USNA encouraging him to complete his app which were meaningless since it was already complete. He also received emails from USNA before and after the webinar a few days ago encouraging him to reapply to USNA. He turned down his appointment last March. Those are meaningless as he is a 2023 at USMA.

A LOE is not the beloved LOA but has its own merit. I have a 2021 double major son at USMA who never received a LOE or LOA. He is amazingly successful enjoying a semester abroad so no worries if neither ends up in your portal.

Gonna sound like a broken record, but an LOE is not meaningless. Not every 3Qd candidate receives an LOE. Not every incomplete file receives an LOE.

Our N=1 sample size on the LOE was that our MOC was copied on it and our DD was only candidate for our MOC that had this. The way it was explained to us is that while the LOE does not go as far as the LOA to offer conditional admission, it essentially says you are looking really good within your competitive pool , so we would like to acknowledge that and at the same time offer you an opportunity for a visit.

LOE is just a letter saying we like what we see so far and an offer to visit so we can get to know each other better. Nothing more nothing less. You are not being offered an appointment, you are no the slate winner or current leader. Just we like what you look like on paper... TODAY! Folks I understand it is tough and we all try to read the tea leaves. Yet no one knows who will get in and who will not. DS is applying and I don't have any idea if he will get in or not! Just put together the best application you can and wait for the thumbs up or thumbs down or we'll let u know (waited listed). Have a plan B, C, D and even E.

Well, the mystery on why the LOE's disappeared is resolved. The original LOE named an admissions person who is a regional commander in another region of the country far from ours. This seemed strange. Now the letter has reappeared, corrected, with our correct regional commander's name on it.

@BigMac, you could go to the West Point website and try to schedule an overnight visit online. If it lets you in (after you get past all the computer glitches/requirements... we got in on one laptop but not on another), your LOE/ability to visit is still there.

And I’m going to go out on a limb and say that top-notch candidates who complete their applications in August don’t get LOEs either. Recently there was a great thread discussing the difference between correlation, causation and coincidence. It comes to mind right about now. (By the way, there’s no way of knowing someone is 3Q without a complete application. Hence someone who is 3Q has no need for an LOE.)

Yep, 3Q means you are ready to go. The 3Q letter will appear in the Candidate Portal. That's when the wait gets tough. Which envelope will it be....
