Losing Appointment

I have received appointments to both West Point and the Naval Academy. Both of my letters have said that I have until May 1st to decide whether I will accept my appointment or not. West Point is currently my top choice but I will visit both Academies in early March so that I can make an informed decision. I am worried that by waiting until March 1st that I may lose my offer or my offer will be resent and my FFR told me to make be ascertain of how long my offer may last. I want to wait till I visit both academies before I make a decision so I can make an informed decision. Has anyone ever seen or heard of a person losing their appointment because they did not accept right away? (I am appointed for the class of 2026)

Just be aware WP is on spring break from March 4-13 in planning your visit. You may want to visit when cadets are there.

Enjoy your visits. They’re both such unforgettable and iconic places, with so much in common but at the same time so distinct from each other. Neither will be at its aesthetic best in early March, and the mids/cadets may be sporting a late-winter orneriness. But you’ll still get a great feel for both places and the experience they offer.

Remember, though, that your final decision should be about the branch itself — Navy/Marines vs. Army — rather than the academy. The former will have much more impact on your life’s path than the latter.

Our DS received appointments to both. He had been to USNA for STEM camp. He had no option to tour West Point due to Covid.
We sat down and had long conversations about duty stations, career options, deployment environments, lifestyles of each service etc. He spoke to retired members of both services prior to making his choice.
@MidCakePa is correct. Don’t pick the school. That is over in a heartbeat. Pick the years after that. Let that drive your decision. What is right for you may not be right for the next guy or gal. Do you.
