I have recently had my official 7th semester transcript requested by U.S.M.A. Fortunately my GPA this semester rose considerably compared to my average GPA across high school. (4.5 and 3.79 respectively) Other then conventional wisdom such as -it couldn't hurt-, does anyone have sense of how this will affect my packet as a whole?

I would like to note, that historically my B's have been constant in mathematics from freshman year until jr.year

A: AP GOV
A: AP COMP SCI
A: LET4
A: AP Physics
A: ENGLISH 12
A: STATS

1330 sat, 640 eng/690 math
Passing CFA
full medical qualification
2 nomintaions MOC/JORTC

My question is stemming from my lack of understanding as to why U.S.M.A requests 7th semester transcripts. Why do they? Does my grade increase hold any role in USMA's determination if I am prep bound? Any outstanding points in that nature?

Thank you all for your support.

USMA is likely requesting your 7th semester grades to add to their file and give them more information with which to make a decision. Some candidates are slam-dunk yes, others slam-dunk no. The majority are tweeners for whom more information is always helpful.

Can you elaborate? What do you mean slam dunk yes and slam dunk no?

"Slam dunk yes" -ers are generally those who have received LOA's or LOE's already.
"Slam dunk no" -ers are those who, even with additional information, will be fighting an uphill battle throughout their application process. They aren't bad people, but their profiles don't necessarily warrant appointment when it's all said and done.

Understand that the majority of those appointed are the "tweeners" and not always the "unicorns." ;)

West Point wants to know if you registered for those hard courses, reported those hard courses, and then slacked off or failed. Senioritis, much? For you this is a fantastic!

Thank you Dr.Mom,

I'm getting more and more excited by the day

I must caution that "Slam dunk yes" -ers are generally those who have received LOA's or LOE's already" is simply not accurate. An LOE is NOT indicative of being a "slam dunk" (not really sure what this term means anyway), but it is misleading to think that an LOE connotes any indication other than what it says in the letter. As I've posted previously, an LOA is completely different. As for your 7th semester grades, those will impact your overall WCS on the academic portion of the WCS. I'd caution that an major increase in 7th semester grades, averaged with your prior stats, will be positive but don't infer anything more than that. Keep working hard is the best advice that can be given and focus on your controllables at this point:

  • are you able to report any more ACT/SAT scores that are better than what you have already reported?
  • are you able to report any additional extracurriculars?
  • keep pressing hard on your 8th semester grades to show that continued positive trend
These are the key items within your control than can continue to make a positive difference.

Last, for the applicant, remember, this is a long race. There may be a first big wave coming out in mid-January. You may be in that wave but you may also be waiting until the end of April to hear anything. It is important to be excited, continue to work hard at school and sports/fitness, enjoy the days with your family and friends, and develop other wonderful plans for next year (e.g. your Army ROTC scholarship, at which great university are you planning on using it?) Do not be discouraged during the admissions process. Keep faith.

Regarding the 8th semster transcripts, are those always requested, wouldn't you already have had an offer of appointment ot not at the point you senior year ends? What is the point of the request to begin with as you would already be a graduate of highschool?

Because if someone gets a case of senioritis and makes bad grades in the 8th semester the offer of appointment can be withdrawn at the pleasure of the Academy.

My now 2023 cadet, who had an early LOA, had to submit transcripts from 7th semester and 8th semester last year. He got an offer of appointment in January. I think admissions just wants to see that applicants are keeping up on their academics during senior year when it’s tempting to let things slide. If you’ve had an improvement, I can only imagine that will give you a boost and will be seen as a positive trend.
