Hello all. I read through this forum on nearly a daily basis so I thought of not better place to come to with a question.

I am very interested in positions regarding foreign affairs/involvement like Intel, Regional Affairs strategist, etc and was wondering what the best course would be to put myself in the best position to obtain such a placement. I see Foreign area studies as a potential option but am also interested in majors like History and Political Science. I fully am aware that needs of the Air Force come first, but I am curious to know if major truly plays a role in the assignment process? Should I take something that I might perform better in (history) or push for maybe the more “specialized”? Thank you.

For the most part your major plays no role in your post-academy assignment. Major in something you're interested in and/or can help you earn a living when you get out. If foreign affairs is something you want to pursue when you get out, then pursue that.

Building on @kinnem, major in something that you’ll gladly work at and fight through when SA life hits the inevitable doldrums and struggles, and that you’ll feel good about studying should you not get the MOS you were seeking. College and career go much more swimmingly that way.

@MidCakePa has it: Completely independent of the MOS discussion or talk of a career, you should pick a major that you like because you'll be far more likely to work hard at it most of the time and thus get better grades. It takes a special person to grind at something they aren't interested in year after year and still show excellence.

The above being said, certain AFSC’s do require certain majors/college degrees. The AFOCD (linked Here) was coincidentally updated today and shows which majors are mandatory/desired for each major. Let me know if you have any more questions!

This was so very helpful! Thank you all!

Being FAO is certainly something that looks interesting just involves a lot of language immersion.
