March 8th, 2011 AROTC Board

A full cycle needed

I'm right there with you being the crazy nut job!! If you aren't going through this process, nobody out there can get any of the emotions we are all going through. That is why I love this forum! Thank you to all.

The ROO position is one that even after an entire year goes by you still have only done certain parts of your job one time. Plus over the last few years the awarding paradigm has changed every year with both campus based and national scholarships having different emphases. Now there are budget considerations that are coming into play as well. In the Spring of 2009 two schools told us they never filled all of the available slots and now we have ROO's saying half of the previous awardees wouldn't qualify today. The ROO's may have some inkling of the future but certainly don't have a crystal ball. All of this is no excuse for making someone feel like a nut job as they interact with families or discouraging some families from even pursuing a scholarship - those interactions are within their control.

It is fantastic to have real time updates and I commend those of you who are willing to participate even after you ran into a prickly person.

So does anyone know if they are indeed going by alphabetical last name or not?

Nope

Sorry seemed like the best answer.

I don't think anyone can know for sure, some indications point that way, others have talked about SS# being part of the equation. I don't think anyone should count themselves out until the Letters have been sent out. If your status does not change by Wednesday then it probably means you didn't get the offer.

I know that there has been a lot of information passed along here from conversations with ROO's and PMS's a lot of it conflicting. I can only add to the pot by passing along what the PMS at our older son's school has told us.

He said that he doesn't think this will be all sorted out until sometime this summer. Once the national scholarship awards are given he anticipates that there will be spots for campus scholarships that will come available. How they are distributed is another unknown. Last year some applicants were contacted in mid June with an offer from their school.

As it has been said many times this has been a crazy year, the ROTC programs are in the dark almost as much as we all are. Even if you don't receive an offer now, keep in contact with the Cadre at the school you decide to attend.

Good Luck

Jcleppe, what happens to the scholarships that are declined? Are they distributed to the battalions for awarding to other candidates? Or are the funds reallocated to he general scholarship budget line item? In other words, does CC have a fixed number of 4-year and 3-year scholarships that will eventually find their way into the hands of determined candidates? Or do they simply vanish in the way that declined SA appointments do?

I'm wondering if anyone who has received a scholarship....was March your one & only board??

Our DS's only board was March. He applied to USMA and USNA so his medical was already in the system and qualified for those two. Noticed on April 6th that his file was under review and the next date it was list as qualified. We received the confirming letter for his medical qualification last Friday. His status changed this morning around 12 indicating he had been offered a scholarship. Our last name is Se.

Some ROOs actually give me a hard time, like I'm a crazy nut job or something, when I've mentioned this forum exist. They are amazed a group of parents would spend time on this subject and talk together. I can't imagine having lived thru this without the forum, so I guess I'm the crazy nut job. Oh, well.

Some days I feel like a nut job...the whole college process leaves my head spinning then add the ROTC scholarship process, it about pushes me over the edge. This forum has been my saving grace...providing a wealth of information as well as an outlet for my craziness:biggrin:

Congrats to all who have received good news! Cheers to the rest of us still hanging in there. (Beer in hand..Shocktop with an orange garnish):beer1:

Off for now - DS has a houseful of friends over for movie night...I plan to cherish these times, because I know I will be longing for them in the fall. Oh ya, and tomorrow night is Prom!!

Well I received the update and was told by a birdie that I'd be pleased with my results. My last name is da. And my personality type is estj... Perfect to lead :shake:

Got an Army ROTC scholarship. Last name starts with H. Hope that helps! Congrats to everyone who already got it and good luck to those of you who are sitting tight.

better late than never

Just got home from work on the West Coast. DS awarded scholarship at around 1:00 EST time. Don't know if 3 year or 4 year or where but just the fact he has "something" is an incredible relief.

DH has been laid off since Nov and the money for college is huge, but the real value for us has been the lifting of our DS's spirits.

Competition for schools, especially in CA has been MASSIVE, and the fees for the Universities of Ca(think UCLA) are going to go up a projected 30%

Over and over, we've been told how competative it is to get into college and DS has done everything possible to compete. (one UC he applied to and did not gain admittance to had 53,000 applicants for 3,500 spots)

After receiving the TWE from USMA as QNS( because, we were told, we live in one of the most--here comes the word again--competative districts in the state) DS has been wondering what is "wrong" with him. Even though we've told him there is nothing he could have or we would have advised him to do differently, rejection still hurts.

Throughout this process, I've said over and over again I wouldn't want to be a teenager today. The pressures they face are enormous, and I've come to realize they are facing the same pressures in high school that I didn't experience until I was in college.

Having said all that, with or without the scholarship, we are proud of our DS and our hopes and prayers go out to you still waiting--know that others are sending their good thoughts and wishes and will continue checking the forum to share in the joy, scholarship or not, pride, and devotion shown for the DS's and DD's of the parents on this forum.

It would be cool if we had a thread with scholarship winners with a few basic stats. It would help future cadets see what their chances might be.

Maybe something like:

College
GPA
SAT
Leadership (JROTC/Eagle Scout etc)
Volunteer
Clubs
Athletics

Just the basic facts and no other posts.

Start one up, sounds like it would be helpful.

That was a very nice and thoughtful post, 2kids4me. Congrats!

Congrats to everyone else!! And to everyone still waiting, good luck!

Only if the standards didn't change! Next year will be tougher than this year, I expect.

It really depends. If the housing market picks up a little the number of applicants will fall. If the US was dragged into another conflict the numbers could also drop.

Of course budget pressure might/will rear their ugly head as well.

New to this great site! I have been lurking from SC for the past few weeks while awaiting any news from the Cadet Command website. Our son's school of choice is The Citadel and we have been lucky enough to have a ROO who is very patient and knows what a long and ardous wait this process is for children and parents. I just want to wish everyone here the best of the luck!

Patentesq. you always have been right on with your posts, but i have to disagree with the alphabet thing this time around. As of now, as far as I know, nobody with the last name of O or later has had a status change, yet tons of 1st half of the alphabet yesterday and today.

I guess I'll do my part! This forum has helped me a lot and it's time I stopped whining and contributed to discussion.

Got my scholarship today.

College: Rutgers.
GPA: 82.1... Not too impressive, but my high school is 30th in the nation. Maybe that helped.
SAT: 1400 on the old scale. 2050, otherwise.
Leadership (JROTC/Eagle Scout etc): President of my school's Freestyle Rap Club! I manage about 30 rowdy seventh graders every single Saturday through tutoring.
Volunteer: Over 300 hours at a science museum and a tutoring place. I also balanced two jobs and rigorous academics, though my GPA indicates not too successfully.
Clubs: Aforementioned freestyle rap club, Media Critique Club.
Athletics: Wrestling for three years. I had a short stint with cheerleading and football. My schools don't offer athletic letters.

On the page prior is someone with S and I thought I read something like W.
