March 8th, 2011 AROTC Board

I ask this because DS 2 wants forensic science, not the best student in the world, but has the APs, ECs and if he matches the tradition of add a 0 behind the SAT he would be a 2000 SAT. So I am curious is he out of the game? For AFROTC he is out of the game.

Yes, I know he has 0% chance of getting it if he doesn't apply, just trying to get the ducks in a row.

Out of the game due to his major? SAT's are pretty good.

Personal experience may cloud my judgement, but IF I was advising a future AROTC applicant it would go something like.... find smaller state schools you like and could fit into well. You must have 3.5 or higher unwgpa, an ACT/SAT of 25+ or equil., you must have 2 or more varsity sports w/ letters and a captain if at all possible, other ecs that seem to be valuable are Eagle, student senate, NHS, church related volunteer and/or part time work in life guarding or other outdoor activity. This is not at all statistically proven, this is just my impression of what seems to work. Also, SMCs seem to get a lot of respect in this system. JMHO.

100% agree, in addition (if you NEED the scholarship, and have average credentials) write a really good essay, interview with your first choice school, do an overnight-er and AM PT there, you want a relationship with your future unit. I think your first choice school should be one where you are in the top 50% or even better top 25% of applicants. (even if your 2nd choice school is actually your 1st)

West Coasts schools

Hi all,

Hope that afternoon posting wave is real. Waiting sucks. Anyone out there who has heard, applied to schools in WA or OR? Has anyone heard from private schools? If so, where?

Thanks and good luck!

How bought some stats (GPA's, test scores, etc) from the scholarship awarded DDs and DSs? It could be encouraging to those of us waiting to see how we stand.

Great add on. Also, keep an open mind to SMP options available. I'm not sure I would have advised my DS to do anything differently, even tho it would have made him more competitive. I've seen you(Pima) write before that the balanced child is more important than the all academic focused(or other narrower focus)and I completely agree.

That is where I guess the AFROTC and AROTC part paths, because a 3.5 uwgpa, but a 25 ACT would appear that they did not take the most rigorous courses, thus, they would get marked down.

AFA considers 24 V as non-competitive. 95% of AFA cadets apply AFROTC, so they need to be in the 30's. Again remember the AFROTC program is not tied to schools, it is tied to the cadet, thus, they draw a line and say anyone above these stats go. I DO NOT want anyone to perceive that I am slamming the Army. The AROTC program is tied to the cadet and the school. Additionally, AFROTC really heeds to the major, whereas, IMPO Army doesn't. Forensic Science would not be given an edge like a child who declared engineering. It is all about the needs of the branch and I respect that.

Additionally uwgpa in our area can be no AP's. Thus, it is the wgpa that they look at.

We are out of the running. DS plays football. Starts in June with Combine, 5 days a week(6 am - 2/3 pm) until Aug., plays until Nov. starting August, starts weightlifting practice in Mar 3 days a week after school until June. As you can see it is 9 months here.

Thank you for your info. It will give me the opportunity to investigate more.

A part of me believes he will go Army because, I have 3 kids.

First 2 go to ACC schools. so they tease each other. (DS1 and DD)
It would only make sense that my boys go different branches to egg each other too!:shake:

Thus, it will become always 1 kid being the tie breaker in the sibling fight.

OBTW, Bullet as an AF officer spent 2 tours with the Army in a joint position, so we love both branches.

Haven't seen most post the weighted gpa, I know AP course work helps the academic area, but not a lot. Football is the most respected sport, so if he can captain he's still potentially golden. I've got the 3 kiddos too, if they all did the same thing it would be very boring being a parent:wink:

I would think we would be seeing a lot more movement by now. Only 4 1/2 hours left in the day.:frown:

Here's a question... why would CC ask a canidate to get a medical and eye exam before being offered a scholarship? We were told before my son applied that that would come after the notification that he had earned a scholarship.

ok i give. what is SMP?

Kev's Pop. It is the Simultaneous Membership Program. I was told if my DS did not receive scholarship that this option would be available to him. He would do basic training this summer and become contracted with the Army right away. They will pay certain amounts and certain benefits but it varies by state. He would still graduate a 2nd Lt. CO.

It has been awhile since I've had the conversation with our Roo and the SMP person on campus. Anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Hope this helps!

Yep, 1:25 pm here, and I'm in the same time zone as FT Knox. They were posting a lot more on Thurs/Fri. So far I've only counted 2 new offers today. Hanging out till the end of business today, not going into work after all. Kinda glad, but could use the hours. Oh, well.

I know. That is what is just killing me. Why would my DS receive that packet last Monday if he is not being awarded? But then again several days ago we all had that conversation. Basically I think it came down to...since this is the last board they are getting all the top kids medically certified so that if some awards are turned down or others are not medically qualified they can then know for certain who to offer the remaining slots to.

There have been many applicants sent thru DodMERB before the offer this year. One group received their paperwork to do the exams last week, many of them have received offers, not sure if all or not. My DS has been qualified by DODMERB since Dec., so they did things a little differently this year than in the past.

Speaking from the AF world, eyes are an issue, if in the interview they learn that there is an issue that would require a waiver from DodMERB they would advise to do this to get the process moving along.

Once the paperwork starts it is fast and furious.

Hi I'm new to the forum and made a couple of posts but mostly have been checking in the past months to learn so much from you all. My DS received his notification on Friday and email from ROO as well. Here are his stats (not to brag just to possibly help others): ACT 26, GPA 3.6 at very competitive highly ranked school; Eagle Scout; varsity team captain for swim team; club swimming and other club sports (captain as well); numerous vol hours with school organizations and others; AP classes jr and senior year;
Hope it helps others . I also saw on the ROTC website that the average ACT was 26 last year and the average gpa was 3.5 ( I could be off a little but I think that is close.)

Thanks for the stats. My DS fits in closely with your DS stats and activities. Keeping our fingers crossed.:thumb:

My DD was one of the ones that received the medical packet but has not been awarded a scholarship as of yet. Unfortunately, got us really excited. Hopefully if she doesn't get an offer now it will mean she is close to the top for any leftovers. Her physicals are set up for this Wed/Fri. and we are sticking with it just in case. We have heard there has only been one female get an offer at Bama so far. She is going either way but the OOS tuition will kill us without some help so keeping fingers crossed!

You are thinking logically. I am sorry but that is not allowed in this process.
