March 8th, 2011 AROTC Board

Our family and friends think we're crazy. No military here. DS has an academic merit full ride to his 2nd choice school -- AROTC is good there, but #1 he likes better and ROTC tends to do better in comparison. He's willing to go SMP or whatever it takes to make this school work for him.

Yes, we found this group in December - it is so great to have like minded(even if we are nut jobs:biggrin:) parents to talk with - like finally finding the perfect pre-school or something when they were little tykes.

Your DS is very accomplished....I know you are proud!

I do feel a bit nutty. Because we move all the time with the military, finding schools has always been a big job for me. I have homeschooled at times too when stationed in less desireable places. We are the only military in our great big family and they all think we are crazy. They always ask, "When is DH's time up?" as if he were serving a prison sentence. Ha! I explain, "this is his career and he absolutely loves what he does." "What about you? When is your time up?" They look at me with apologetic eyes. Ha!

So, let's find out already so we can all work towards some inner peace. :)

Hi Ohio, Sorry number 3 doesn’t fly; his 1st choice is the 2nd best school in the state. He believes, and I think he is correct in that graduating from his number one school will have a bigger impact on his career all-round, financial and promotion wise.
I hope that you have good news by the end of today, its tough being a dad.

“ Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. “

Thank you Ohio....yes, the goal is to commission. My husband did. He was also SMP. He has had a great career. We love the military life. We do! 20 years and we are still at it. (29 years for DH) It's been hard explaing this to family. Things have changed in the world of ROTC. Even since my husband was a Professor of Military Science from 2007-2009. But we do have top notch Officers and that is absolutely wonderful! As a country, we should be proud! proud of these amazing new ROTC cadets with a huge future ahead of them!

TuckerTroops - thanks for posting. It's great to hear from a military wife and mother - that you have loved the military life! It's so encouraging to me because we have no military experience. And like so many who have posted we've gotten some push back from family and friends - but our DS is sure this is the path for him.
And it is great to have this resource because there aren't many who understand all the emotions that we've been through this year. I just wish we could continue to support each other next year - I think I might need it!

Just checking in on my lunch hour. Eye exam for DS went perfect. No status change as of yet for us. Looks extremely slow here as far as updates. What's up CC?

There have been two posts of status change. one with last name T and I think the other was a M. Pretty quiet on the Western front here.

There are so many letters that we have not seen. I refuse to believe they are done. I wish every prospective parent was on this site to share! We'd have a better idea.

I think it was a Tr and a K....I'm not going back and re-reading, we've done a lot of posting today.... Bet I could out type a CC person.:shake:

We are in Kansas, Ft. Leavenworth.

Yea, finally another poster from Kansas! We are in Wichita.:biggrin: DS' JROTC team is planning to come to Leavenworth in 2 weeks for the Raider Challenge!

His first choice school is Pittsburg State, about 3 hours away. He has had several good visits there and really clicked with the cadre.

I'm enlightened to read your posts about being happy in the military. This is all new to me and DS is set on leading the army life. He has said if he doesn't get the scholarship he wants to straight up enlist this summer. We are hoping to get him to do college first, with or without a scholarship. DH and I may just be tightening our belts ALOT to make it happen.

Welcome to the forum! This has been my sanity saving haven for several months. None of my family and friends understand the military desire at all. :thumb:

Wonder what the delay is. I'm rooting for all of you!

So, I e-mailed ROO to ask if he knew if DS received a 3 yr or 4 yr and he said he would not know the results until the scholarship offers were sent out to the students and that the letters would be mailed out on the 22nd.

I thought the ROO knew that info especially since that's the university he'd be attending.

I don't know if things are different for this board, but when my DD received the scholarship on the Jan board, her school wouldn't tell her. Later I spoke to him and he said they were directed not to divulge info until the applicant received the letter. I called one of her other school choices and they looked up on their system and told me which school and that it was a 3 yr.

Good Luck!!!

Like the quote. I collect inspiring words for when my own fail.

It is difficult when one school is significantly stronger. Will you attempt the transfer? I hope you can get the decisions and everything lined up.

If they aren't mailing letters until Friday, 22nd they could technically input offers all week:eek::eek::eek: I don't think my heart meds will make it thru. DH will need the AED machine here for sure:thumb:

Got a Call

Son just got a call from a "previously reliable confidential source" (sorry, been a cop for 28 years) telling him that he got a 4 yr scholarship to a major in-state school, or a 3 yr AD scholarship to the out-of-state school which is his first choice (and the school he will attend.) That's a blessing because I frankly thought that his offer would be to the in-state school only. I guess he could request a transfer of the 4 yr to the other school but I think there would be little chance of success - they have obviously already evaluated that when they gave him the two choices. We are still hopeful for ALL of you still waiting - Clarkson has not yet passed the word that the offers are over, so hang in there!

so glad your "source" could share some very good news with you. hanging in there, but wow, the thought of ALL week makes me feel a little faint....

I swear, CC needs to get their communication sorted out. I was reading the CC Facebook page, a person asked on Friday if more updates were going to happen. This was the CC response that was given at 6:30am Friday. From what we have all been told by almost everyone is that CC does not send letters out until the updates are completed.

U.S. Army Cadet Command (ROTC) Notification is being mailed out now, online status changes may not be updated immediately.

Don't they have any idea that some of you are running out of Girl Scout Cookies while the wait goes on.

Ksmom,

I would seriously sit down with him using this link.

http://www.dfas.mil/militarypay/militarypaytables/2011MilitaryPayTable1-4.pdf

He may want to get AD ASAP, but does he realize the AESOP fable is true. The tortoise always beats the hare.

By the time an Army officer hits @24 he is equal in pay, by 26 he is beating the highest enlisted ranks, by 30 he beats out the highest ranks that are close to retiring, in other words they are at least 8 yrs older. And anyone who has lived life knows 30 you are probably a newlywed or just popping out a baby, 38 you have kids and a wife.

Do the math. 38 and making the same amount of money as the 30 yo with more financial burdens, or 30 making the same amount as the 38.

Also as an AF retired wife, I will tell you that the 2nd career paycheck also is a factor.

I am not trying to say don't go enlisted, just saying that money is an issue and having a college degree in the military is a make or break issue.

Yes! My status changed between 11 and 12 pm today. Last name "T" and 1st 2nd and 3rd choices were all in-state public universities all in Michigan:thumb: No word on what type it is... 3yr? 4yr? or to which university...
Hope this is helpful!! Still pulling for all of you!! :shake:

Yes thank you Ohio, the ducks are all lined up but the water is choppy. With the aid of people like you, and the lighting speed of e-mails plus thinking three steps ahead the end is in sight, God willing.
