Mattis' Letter on civil unrest

Captain John Dowd - Trump attorney (regarded as one of the best) - I didn’t realize he was in the marines ... wrote a letter to Mattis. I found it interesting.

Interesting that the President’s paid attorney wrote a letter condemning Gen. Mattis. If Roy Cohn were still alive, he would have written one as well.

I find it much more interesting that three former CJCS, Generals Richard Meyers, Martin Dempsey and Adm. Mike Mullen, not to mention John Allen, Wesley Clark, James Stavridis and John Kelly have all spoken out. And they have done so grudgingly. They are not commenting on the politics of the case, like “Capt.“ Dowd. (My DS is a Capt, which entitles him to what?) They are not “defending“ Mattis. They are speaking out in defense of the traditional role of the military in the US.

We don’t do military parades except for returning troops. US Presidents don’t refer to “my Generals”. Politicians are always quick to use the military as a backdrop and these General officers as well as Gen Milley and Sec Def. Esper were quick to distance themselves from the Church/Bible photo op. They do not believe that clearing Lafayette Park for that purpose was the equivalent of Churchill walking the streets of London during the Blitz, despite Kayleigh McEnany’s charterization.

I respectfully disagree. The President, under the Insurrection Act, has the authority to move the military in. “ The Insurrection Act of 1807 is a United States federal law (10 U.S.C. ... §§ 331–335) that empowers the president of the United States to deploy military troops within the United States in particular circumstances, such as to suppress civil disorder, insurrection and rebellion.”

The President is the Commander in Chief. Under the Constitution, the President as Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy is the supreme military commander charged with the responsibility of protecting and defending the United States. The phrase “Army and Navy” is used in the Constitution as a means of describing all the armed forces of the United States.

The people elect the President. The military must answer to the President. President Trump does not answer to them.

Senator Grassley wrote an email to Secretary of Defense Mattis, looking to unredact information being kept from the public that shows General Flynn was set up and spied on and was innocent. Mattis did nothing with it.

IIRC, Flynn maintains President Obama fired him from the Democrat Defence Intelligence Agency three years ago because he took a stand against “radical Islamism,” and claimed Al-Qaeda was expanding its ranks around the globe. He was also criticizing Afghanistan.

They took Flynn out for some reason. Does anyone here have information about Flynn? Flynn’s attorney Sidney Powell, maintained they took him out because he knew where the bodies are buried.

With all that this President has faced since the day he took office. At some point we all decide we want to hear the truth. Certainly the judge in the Flynn case doesn’t want to dismiss this case even though there was Brady material kept from him, felonies were committed, spying, etc. the judge is violating a recent Supreme Court case.

We heard the market was going to crash by Klugman, it didn’t. We heard about Russia. It was not true. And they knew it. The Ukraine phone call was conflated. Adam Schiff has been telling the public untruths. Felony leaks.

Two tiered justice system.

I get what everyone says about Trump. At some point the continual attacks need to stop. Trump has not been linked to any of the riots at all. He spoke out against the murder and immediately set the DOJ to go after federal crimes. Not sure what he did wrong.

He wants them to stop ... as is his constitutional right. His constitutional obligation.

At some point we stop and wonder why the military (who paid money to Fusion GPS), the media, the horrible decisions by governors over this pandemic with the nursing homes and drugs, The looting of the Democratic run cities. These killings are under democrat party rule in cities and states. The a president wants the cities protected.

A professor In Alabama was sending out instructions on twitter on how to take down monuments like the Washington Monument. They burned the church. The looted many cities. They killed and injured cops. And military. They burned buildings down and destroyed businesses. The black community is the one who suffers the most from these riots.

Cops are being told to stand down. Sanctuary cities. Now they want to pass laws to deband the police. Cuomo passed a bail reform law so criminals can hit the streets to commit more crimes (some have committed murder after release!)

Someone needs to take control. And any military not willing to help should resign.

I want justice. I want answers. I think we all just want that. It just seems like this is bigger than we think.

BTW - he was his attorney. He isn’t now.

I am so grateful that General Mattis and Admiral Mullen wrote what they did. My son was losing faith in the military’s role to protect and defend the constitution.

He shouldn’t lose faith. The military has its issues as does any large insitution and it doesn’t get much larger than the US National Security apparatus. One aspect of American exceptionalism is the military’s ability to eschew politics And focus on the mission.

My DS was outspoken on every single political issue when he was a cadet. He didn’t have anything else to do. That all changed when he commissioned. He managed a group of enlisted Soldiers who came from everywhere—from rural Mississippi (black and white) to Brooklyn (black and white). His world will become and should become much smaller for a while.

While this statement is absolutely true, it seems as though senior brass is posturing itself to refuse such an order to deploy in the US. I won't get involved in political discussion about this- I just think this will make for an awesome case study in military ethics.

Anywho, I think this can all be fixed with the Guard. The active military probably won't be necessary.

The NYC police union has called on Cuomo and Trump to send help as the city is being destroyed. If Cuomo won’t send the guard ... what should Trump do?

Case study? The President makes the decision in cases of civil disorder. They follow his orders. They should resign if they don’t take the orders.

Seems odd these guys are the ones who wanted our troops in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan to do what exactly? What are we doing in Afghanistan? I prefer we protect our neighborhoods.

Again - I want to stress - there are legitimate protesters that have a right to peacefully protest. The ones hijacking it and burning down buildings, attacking business owners, attacking the police, etc. is what needs to be stopped.

Which member of currently serving "senior brass is posturing to refuse an order?"

That statement is contrary to the fact there are thousands of active duty members ready to go if ordered. And if ordered, they will comply with those orders.

My father-in-law was a marine fresh out of the jungles of Vietnam and they put them in Washington DC during the riots of 1971...…………..what's the difference between that and today. Its just a large portion of society doesn't remember or even know those situations existed.

Here's a tidbit of info in case ever called upon, the Marines at Marine Barracks Washington, also known as 8th & I, (not the Marine Band members) are 0311s, Marine Rifleman. They do the burials and Silent Drill Team type of things. Their primary mission is the defense of Washington, DC.

That was him. I think he was a silent drill team member for a short time. He escorted Eisenhower's body back to Kansas.
Member of the walking dead in Vietnam. Was at the battle of Khe Sanh.

Has stories of standing guard for several foreign diplomats.

Has stories of the riots too, but that would get off topic a little probably.

I meant to quote your above post but my administrator has engaged her 1-Alpha sweat pump and is shooting out flash emails about posting final grades. Even though I submitted first and correctly, I still had to answer emails and was trying to multi-task.

Thank you for sharing the stories of your father-in-law.

Since you are appreciative, I'll just add quickly, retired Sgt Major after 22 yrs. Never graduated high school. Enlisted at 17 figured he was going to get drafted so might as well control what branch he joined. Wanted to join the Navy, but that recruiting room was too crowded so he walked across the hall to the Marines which wasn't crowded at all, go figure. I know he did 2, maybe 3 tours in Vietnam, purple heart. Still has shrapnel in his shoulder. Still splits his own firewood by hand. 72 years old I think.

I've heard all his stories multiple times thru the years. I can give you his phone number, he's more than willing to share them with anyone 😁, especially fellow Marines.

I love stories like your father in law's. It is a nice reminder to us parents and our aspiring(or junior) military officer DD/DS's, that his story is more typical in the US military than their own.

Has stories of the riots too, but that would get off topic a little probably.

There are 47 pages on the Bacon thread, so don't fret about going off topic.
