Hello!

My DD received an LOA for the 2025 class and our whole family is cautiously excited.

Her file is complete, other than DODMERB and (of course) a nomination.

With regard to the nomination process, she has submitted an application for all of the ones she’s eligible for. Does anyone know how they will inform her of an interview, if they even select her for one? I am so paranoid about missing a letter in the mail and of course even more nervous about her receiving a nomination at all.

Additionally, around two years ago, she went to see a counselor. She went no more than 10 times, over the course of 6 months. It was not a psychiatrist or a psychologist. She never received an official diagnosis, nor was she ever prescribed medication. She’s a teenage girl who is incredibly active and a high performer academically. I do believe she was experiencing legitimate anxiety and stress over pressure she puts on herself to achieve, as well as high school friendship and relationship concerns, and sometimes it’s just better to talk to someone who isn’t mom or dad. She has never experienced anxiety in a way it has prevented her from achieving her goals, participating academically or in her community or in general living her life. The type of anxiety she has experienced, I’d have to imagine is quite common with the type of student applying to an academy or any other elite school for that matter.

I am confident West Point is the right environment for her, and I have no doubts about how well she’ll be able to perform under pressure in both the academy and the military, but I am so worried that those few appointments will come between her and her dreams of serving her country as an officer in the US Army. Does anyone have any insight on how this is handled by DODMERB? I have scoured this forum for information and all I’m finding is how they handle things with a diagnosis or prescribed medication.

Thanks in advance and best wishes to all!

As for noms, elected official sources can choose their own methods of evaluating applications and informing applicants, including no interviews, on whatever timeline they choose, as long as they get their slated to the SA by their deadline. It has happened that a nom simply shows up in the candidate portal. The non-competitive noms (service-related) just show up. The SAs who use the VP nom choose who is going to get it, and it shows up in the portal. I think COVID has affected how many of these processes are happening this year, for the Senators and Representatives.

Your daughter, the applicant, is always free to read Mr. Mullen’s FAST Sticky at the top of the DoDMERB forum and email him. As the Deputy Director of DODMERB, he is an official source, and kindly offers to communicate privately with applicants. @MullenLE

1. Each MON runs their own process and may inform about interviews in a different way. Only the MOC's website or office can give a definitive answer.

2. It doesn't sound to me like the counseling will be an issue, but again, post this to the DODMERB forum for a definitive answer There's lots of help there. Also the DODMERB website might provide an answer. You can certainly find plenty of info about the process there.

Don't mean to be unhelpful, but primary sources are always the best.

This was very helpful! I am new to these forums and there are SO many pages to sift through. I’ll check it out. Thanks again!

If you haven’t already done so as a new member, scroll to the top of forums such as Nominations and DoDMERB and read the Sticky posts there. There is The Acronym List on the home page menu.

Your daughter is in the right place - Mr. Mullen will very quickly and competently answer your daughter’s questions.

He will not alleviate parent’s nerves though - It doesn’t go away. An occasional alcoholic beverage can be helpful I found.

And welcome to the crazy world of applying to an academy. MAKE SURE there is a solid Plan B (C, etc) despite having a LOA. ‘Ya just never know what can happen along this bumpy ride!
Thanks!! Crazy world for sure! The LOA was a wonderful surprise but she’s going to be working on a backup just in case. These final two pieces come along with so much uncertainty! 😬

He may see it here but his focus is on monitoring DODMERB. If I wanted to be sure he,saw it, I would post it there. That's just me though.

Waaaay to much to read.

HopefulArmyMom25 - You are too old to be considered. Sorry :bang: :zip:

Have DD send me an email: lawrence.e.mullen.civ@mail.mil; provide her complete name and last 4 SSN; have her ask whatever DoDMERB questions SHE needs to ask. I will be working tonight from 6-10 PM MDT:wiggle:

:coo2l: I will have her reach out with any concerns! Until I found these forums, I had NO idea she’d have such an incredible resource available to her. Thank you so much!
