More than one Principal nominee?

DS was was very honored and excited to receive his MOCs Principal nomination to the USNA. One of his friends was also granted the designation for USNA. I always assumed there was one PNOM per MOC. How will the academy view this? Does this lessen his chances of being selected for USNA?

In addition to @NavyHoops insight above as a possible and likely scenario, the thing to focus on is a nom is in hand. If it’s a principal nom, and your DS is found to be fully qualified, then it’s about 99%+ chance of an appointment. I didn’t put 100%, because the statutory language for USNA permits them to choose other than the principal nom, but they typically will, to maintain good relationships.

USNA usually does not tell candidates if they are fully qualified. The CFA (physical) and DoDMERB (medical) are obvious once updated in the portal. The academic (everything else that is evaluated) is usually an unknown.

Of course you are right.

But I wonder how many candidates given the principal nomination aren’t academically qualified.

Probably very few - but there could be those who have all the GPA, standardized test scores, class standing, fancy stats, etc., but are very weak in leadership and other graded attributes and skills, not well-rounded at all, throw in a hubris-ridden essay that doesn’t ATFQ and a poor impression on the BGO, and USNA ranks that candidate with a lower WCS than others on the slate. I am sure there are interesting discussions at times with the Admissions team when it comes to evaluating the candidates with the principal noms. The majority of those are probably highly acceptable, and it all works out.

It happened during DS's app cycle. He was named Principal, then he found out so was a young lady he met at Boys/Girls Nation who was also from our state. He was pretty shocked to receive it and very happy. He was even more shocked when she was not appointed. She will be wearing that other uniform tomorrow at the game and is very happy where she landed. Every year they have made a point to meet up and take a picture to send to their moms.

I really cannot imagine it happening often.

DS was one of 2 Principal Nominees to USMA from his Congressman. We were a bit confused when we heard of the other one until we learned of 2 slates being submitted.
Congratulations on your PNOM. Now be certain to complete everything and continue to do well in all areas.

Not only could there be 2 slates, there could be 3 or more. MOCs gain slots when one of "their" mids / cadets graduates or leaves the SA. Thus, for example, if in 2022 there were 2 graduates and 1 who left for personal reasons, that would open up 3 slots against which the MOC could make nominations. The SAs try VERY HARD to convince MOCs not to fill all those spots in one year b/c that will likely leave one or more years with no openings, which is terrible for candidates. However, it is entirely up to the MOC.

Having 2 slots in one year every so often is normal given 5 slots and 4 years of mids / cadets.
