At this time of the year, for those with the good fortune of having multiple SA appointment offers. How and when (did you or will you) notify the particular academy that you will not be attending? My understanding at this time is that until you relinquish your offer (some wait list candidates will remain on hold). Thank you for any input.

Last year, DS had appointments to USNA, USAFA, and USMA that arrived between Christmas Eve and mid to late January. He had LOA's from USNA and USAFA. After all three had arrived, on Dad's suggestion/insistence, he pondered the choices and discussed the options with family, friends, BGO, ALO, teachers, coaches, etc. He held them all for about two weeks and then sent his acceptance to USNA and declines to USAFA and USMA. He actually mentioned wanting to get the decision over with to free up those spots and I assured him that taking the appropriate time to make the best decision was better than making a quick decision in this case. Best of luck.

Our DS had a late MOC appointment date, January, so we did not know anything until last week of Jan. As is the case with most, by then, we were burned out so we didn't discuss much about the academies, etc., for the whole month of February and decided March is decision time. That gave him enough time to think, re-think, ask questions, etc., before he made a decision. As soon as he decided we let AFROTC, USMA and USMMA know he chose USNA, his principal appointment. Navy is where he was leaning anyway but the others deserved serious consideration.

Only after he received his noms did he get LOA from West Point, Kings Point a little earlier. AFA never made a decision. Go figure but I guess they were waiting to see if he got a nom b/4 committing. No biggie, I think we always knew he the Navy was right for him. :thumb:

I'm with the other posters. This time last year, DD had appointments to USNA, USMA, USCGA, and USAFA (not to mention multiple civi colleges). LOAs to USMA and USNA by November. I insisted that she wait and not make an emotional decision. I wanted her to be thoughtful and take everything into consideration. She worked very hard throughout high school and for each appointment (the essays seemed neverending). So, in the end, she was rewarded with multiple options--her hard work paid off. After she made her decision, DD wrote each institution a personal letter informing them of her decision by the end of March.

Wishing the OP the best of luck!

Decision Dates

DD had appointment to USMA since Nov and just received appointment to USAFA. Letter from USAFA instructs DD to make decision by 15 Apr. Does anyone know why USAFA does not use the traditional date of 1 May to allow candidates to make a decision? Did USAFA have the same early deadline in previous years?

That's funny. When I got my BFE for AFA this year, it said the decision must be received (not postmarked) no later than May 1. Nothing in there said April 15.

Oh well. I talked with my ALO, BGO, people I know who are recently out of the academies or there currently (as well as their families when I couldn't get in contact with some people).

Ultimately, I decided to hang on to both offers until one was sent in, just to be sure.

April 15 is the date that Admissions hopes to have informed all candidates with noms what their status is regarding USNA 2016. The May 1 date is for accepting/rejecting offers as stated in the notice announcing the offer.
