Our son has two noms to USAFA and just learned that another candidate from his high school just got accepted there. I have a pit in my stomach, I feel like his chances just narrowed considerably……anyone have reason to say I’m wrong on that one ? I know there is no way to know exactly what this means but I can’t think it is a positive development.

First, go refresh on the Sticky Note pinned to the top of the Nominations Forum, to remind yourself how many kinds of noms there are, and the all-important fact USAFA will charge 1 appointment on a slate to the elected official, but may choose other fully qualified candidates on the slate to offer an appointment to, according to established guidelines and charge those appointments to authorities they manage.

Additionally, you don’t know if those appointees had other noms from other sources, such as Presidential or other service-connected noms, and you don’t know where those appointments were charged.

This is why applicants are strongly encouraged to tend their alternate plans, do what they need to do to manage stress, such as PT, and not look right or left at other candidates’ statuses.

I know that one persons experience is in no way indicative of another’s experience, but to give you some faith…last year my district sent 8 people to USAFA, and right now I am one of 5 or 6 people who have received an appointment to USMA in my district thus far…and it’s only Feb 6. Don’t loose faith, I’m still hoping to get an appointment to USNA, which is my first choice, and the waiting sucks, but I know in the end it will all be worth it.

It’s definitely possible they both get appointments as the above posts mentioned. Especially if you are in a highly competitive district, it definitely isn’t rare for two kids from the same school to receive appointments to the same academy. I’m one of two from my high school with appointments to USNA, so speaking from experience it’s highly possible especially if he has two noms.

I've seen 4 people the same school ( school 20 min down the road) get accepted. Also had two from my own school get accepted at once. Let's just say it's uncommon if someone isn't announced going to one of the service academies in our district. If USAFA wants people they get them. Nothing to worry about especially with a nomination. No guarantees of course but no amount of worry will change the future.

We are in the same situation with multiple highly qualified students who applied to the USAFA from the same class. They all know and are supportive of each other with the hope of moving forward as a group. Fingers crossed this will happen…. Then there is reality… the number of nominations they each have varies from one to three. Does this play a role in the selection process from the academies? Is there anything that can be done at this point to stand out?

As an ALO, I had multiple years where 5 from the same HS graduating class received appointments to USAFA. There are many variables that come into play for this - number of slates for the MOC, recruited athletes, very competitive applicants in the National Wait List, etc.

Focus on what you control and the process will take care of the rest. I understand the waiting is hard - it is not lost on me.

Last year my DS's HS chose 5 to go to SAs. Two were for USAFA and one for USAFA Prep School. I believe the other 2 were for West Point. They also had something like 13-15 enlistments. Def possible to have multiple appointments for the same SA!

DS's HS in AZ should have 6 at USAFA later this year. Last year, we didn't think he had any chance because there were 2 athletes already committed from his class. But he got a Falcon Foundation Scholarship and attended Northwestern Prep (after turning down a direct appointment to USMA). Today, Senator's office let him know he's getting the USAFA appointment.

Congrats - persistence pays off and having a son there already I can tell you your DS will love it there !
