NASS 2010 Acceptance Thread

I wouldn't worry about that slight of an elevation change. We lived at 5000 ft when DS went to NASS, so the "thicker" air was helpful, but the humidity wasn't!

On the packing of liquids, creams, etc, several posters have mentioned the 3 oz rule, but I wanted to give you a heads up. DS had his solid stick deoderant taken away on his way to NASS last year. I'd never heard of that before, but you might want to get a travel size just in case. Also, if you have any necessary perscriptions that are liquids, you can get a note from your doctor saying that they are needed, and they will allow you to carry them on.

BTW, my son said the food was great, and he loved the cafeteria activities! (just a teaser)

I wish you all an exciting time at NASS!!

That just shows you the ineptitude of our security system. We can bring larger amounts of liquids on a plane with a piece of paper, yet SOLID deodorant can be taken up? I guess it's all they can do, they try...
anyways, if i may suggest take lots of travel size things, they are cheaper, and you can have more space in your checked bags too.:thumb:

Thank you MomoftheMagik!! I realized one thing I neglected to include was deodorant! How will I get through the week without that!

Are checked bags the ones that you don't bring with you on the plane and you have to pick it up from the conveyor belt when you land?

To sturner11- yes, it is only the carry on bags that have to be smaller, i would still buy travel size because of price and put them in your checked bags.
and to KveTina-you are exactly right, those bags that you give to the person at the ticket counter are your "checked" bags and those you will pick up, conveniently by the the Midshipmen who are waiting in baggage claim to take us to a week of pain and suffering (jk). Also your carry on is what you keep with you. ie a backpack or purse.

Can you bring regular sized toiletries as long as you put them in your checked bag?

sorry if i rambled but simply yes, no problem at all, i would however put them in a ziplock bag incase something is crushed or the temp and pressure change in flight causes something to bust open, no one wants toothpaste covered sheets.

Alex from Boston here. Going to Session 2. Just came across this thread, and wanted to know (my apologies if it's already been asked/answered) if anyone knows what the fitness test consists of exactly (i.e. allotted time and such).

Thanks in advance,

Alex

I've heard it's really good, like steaks and stuff, but i've also heard they role out the good stuff just before lots of PT!!!:thumb:

It's funny because my son said almost the exact same thing from last year - don't think I've ever posted that but he had said they had steak for breakfast, but of course it was the morning of the CFA and he was afraid to eat too much! Also, he definitely thought NASS was the most physical of the 3 SS's he went to (AF he said was a bit challenging because of the altitude and he didn't find WP's physical at all).

I'm now a 2/C at USNA and I was a squad leader for summer seminar last year. As far as packing lists go, make sure you pack what you can carry, no more, with extra room because you will be issued about 5-6 shirts, shorts a sweat suit and other stuff. You will be wearing the issued shirts every day and the issued shorts for PT. Everything that you bring be prepared to carry up 4-5 flights of stairs, you may get lucky and get a room on 0 deck, but don't count on it.

Another good point! My son had just said that to me for his brother. When he went he had a wheeled duffle bag and a wheeled carry-on bag. His advice was to make sure that I didn't give his brother two wheeled things and that one needed to be on his back since he'd be going up like 5 flights of stairs! Sounds like you're on the same wavelength!

Additionally, you will also take the Navy Physical Fitness Test. I'm not sure of the exact name but do know it consisted of pushups, situps (I'm thinking 2 minutes of each, but could be wrong) and a 1.5 mile run.

Thanks for the replies, everyone, and the compliment stilly :)

One of the things I love about forums is their members' ability to interact and provide personal examples that might prove more useful than a generic Google search.

I recall the food at NASS being better than what I expected. You wouldn't think they'd go through all that effort to trick high school kids into thinking that King Hall is good, but I guess your parents pay for it.

hey guys, not sure how many of you have actually been to the academy, but i go every once in a while and just came back from spending memorial day weekend there. i ran on the track and just make sure that you're used to it - i don't know about you guys but the track at my school has a lot more "give" so it was harder for me to run there. also i get really bored when i'm running on tracks and my mile time is usually a good minute to 1.5 minutes longer than around neighborhoods and such; any tips?
it was also HOT! it was never lower than 80 so the track basically burned through my shoes. humidity wasn't really an issue though, but monday was really bad so that's pretty much up in the air.
on the upside, the whole campus is pretty flat so if we go on company runs it shouldn't be too much of a challenge.

i'm so excited, but so nervous!

good luck, everyone in session 1!

Session 1 starts in 3 days, anyone who's gone before have any last minuet advice? Also, anyone know what is best to wear the first day? I assume we will be doing something physical the first day.

Good luck Maverick.

We will be leaving Houston next Wednesday afternoon for the drive to Annapolis.

Be sure to post when you get home, and let us all know how it went.

Tim

I had to switch sessions, so now I'm in session 2! I hope everyone in the first session has a blast! I'm so excited, I've been counting down the days ever since I got my letter!
