Hello, for all of those who haven’t seen me on these boards, I’m a current 3/C MIDN Tier 3 Major.

Congrats to everyone who has begun to receive their scholarships in the Class of 2023, and good luck to those who are still waiting to hear! I didn’t hear back until April 10th, so keep your head up! Enclosed below is info MIDN have received recently regarding the incoming freshman class’s summer before they arrive at their units.

1) The name will be called New Student Indoctrination, instead of New Student Orientation.

2) It will be 3 weeks at Great Lakes. There will be 2 sequences of it, (one roughly July 3-July 23, and one late July to mid August). All scholarship MIDN will be required to attend, and college programmers who commit to joining the unit before May 15 can attend.

3) There will be 75 1/C Navy MIDN, and a few MO 2/c MIDN from across the country HELPING staff it.

4) The big change is if Big Navy likes what they see in certain college programmers, they will give a FEW scholarships on the spot following the three weeks of NSI.

5) There is still debate on whether NSO for respective units will ALSO happen, in addition to NSI.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

I would expect #5 would be left up to the individual unit, but that's just me.

Question: Is this change intended to make this indoctrination more similar to USNA Plebe Summer (Plebe Summer-lite?) (IOW, are we talking "haircuts")?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and the video. All good information to share with my DS who is in the throes of scheduling his medical and visiting his last college to make a decision.

Is this mandatory for all units for Class of 2023 and classes moving forward? My DS just met with the unit at his 1st choice school last week and they told him they send their new 4/c to Rhode Island for 10 days for orientation.

My understanding is that it is mandatory for all units based on things I've read here. It';s also new this year and it was only recently made mandatory for all units. I'm surprised they are even letting college programmers attend if they commit to the unit early enough. Which also tells me they're pretty serious about it and want to make sure (to the extent they can) that everyone starts of on the same, and proper, footing.

Does anyone know if 4/C Midshipman headed to military colleges, such as VMI and The Citadel, attend? Thank you.

Its funny that they use the word Indoctrination. To me its a negative word

It's interesting to me that you say that. I've been active duty in the Navy for over 20 years, and it's always been what we've called the introduction phase when people report to a new command, especially training commands. I've never really thought about it like that! I guess I can see it from that perspective, though.

I'm genuinely interested to see how this plays out. I think it has a lot of potential. Might help new MIDN to feel more invested, more "part" of the "Big Navy" instead of just part of a local NROTC unit, from the beginning, which could reasonably increase commitment to the program.

So I'm figuring out that 4/C means an incoming Freshman... where does a Marine Mom read up on the program, acronyms, etc., other than this board. Anything that others can recommend? My other son is USMC enlisted, so this is a bit of a new world to learn about for our family. I'm also seeing that although my DS is MO, he will learn much more Navy (don't think enlisted boots do firefighting) through NSI and future summer training.

Yes, all scholarship midshipmen Class of 2023 will attend one of the two sessions of NSI the OP mentioned this summer. This includes those heading to the schools you listed.

The Corps generally always has 3 MEUs afloat, full of Marines. If your ship is afire, you do what you can to fight it, even if it's just helping move hoses, whether you're Navy or Marine. My Marine DS went through some shipboard fire fighting drills while on one of his MIDN cruises. Also helped work the ropes on an actual refueling at sea, which would be another "Navy" type thing. Marines need to be able to move and survive afloat. Even if your son never uses the skill again, there are useful things he will learn about discipline, teamwork, and leadership doing this stuff at indoctrination.

Many NROTC colleges have a Midshipmen Guide online which might be worth a read to pick up some knowledge. Good luck to your son.

I'm going to Texas A&M in the fall, which is also a SMC. We go to the summer indoctrination because NROTC is separate from the Corps of Cadets program at SMCs. So you will have this NROTC summer training and whatever summer indoctrination the SMC you are attending will have.

I know rising 2/C (juniors) are required to attend Sea Trials for about 10 days...one of locations is RI

Second cycle ends on the 13th of August, Matriculation day for VMI is on the 17th of August. Things are going to get interesting if I am selected for the second cycle.

FOW for Texas A&M starts the 14th and they assigned me to 1st cycle. If I had to guess I would say that they would do the same for VMI
