just got news today that my daughter is getting deployed to Kadena. Having a son who is a veteran of the Air Force I know I probably won’t see her for a while, so I am here to ask for advice to maybe start planning a trip to go see her next year. We would be leaving from Charlotte North Carolina, looking for a place to stay and any information you can give us… also, what should I do for the cell phone, because it is currently in my name and I don’t know if she can use it in Japan. Any help is greatly appreciated! **Sharon**

No advice here, but came to say that that Okinawa is so beautiful! My husband was deployed there and I took my kids and stayed for a month. We were actually on Camp Schwab, but spent time on Kadena as well.

thank you!! I’m really looking forward to being able to go out there and see her, even though it’s a year away, I know it’ll be here before you know it!!

... so not sure if you're all are a military family. There are multiple Space-A flights from Travis AFB, CA to Kadena.

DS was stationed at Camp Hanson, somewhat north. We spent a day with him there, then we all went to an AF resort west of Nago for a long weekend. When he went back to work we flew to Tokyo for a few days. Wonderful time there. Cleanest city I've ever seen. We stayed at a Marriot near the airport and took the train everywhere from there. We flew back to Oki on Friday and we spent another long weekend at a Marriot resort on the north end of the island. Lots of resort type places at the north end our final night we stayed at a Holiday Inn (I think) in Naha which was small but nice. We caught the train to the airport for our return the next day. Naha is reachable by cab from Kadena and perhaps by train as well.

We went in Sept or Oct. We stumbled upon a huge annual tug of war in Naha in which the whole island partipates in some way. I would describe the ropes as actually huge cables that are woven by each village on the island and then assembled together. I think it was the 400th annual tug of war. If you participate you get to bring home a small piece of the cable.

I'm sure your daughter will be able to explain more as she learns the island. We went about the middle of DS's tour. Food was great and he would order for us with his little Japanese at some great hole-in-the-wall restaurants.

For phones call your provider. Research ESim.

Hahah, we have a piece of rope from a tug of war when my husband was deployed there.

As for your cell phone, many plans that are 5G offer international calling using data (airplane mode) by calling using the base internet. No cost, and good connectivity.

If you intend to travel "Space A", make sure all travelers have valid current DoD ID Cards. Need military ID or government orders to travel Space A
