That makes it even more difficult to believe.I find this a highly dubious statement. Was this an unlimited tonnage vessel? There was a 24 year old Chief Mate on one of my ships
The sea time requirements alone just to be eligible to take the test for a C/M license make this virtually impossible even if you started on your 18th birthday.
Yep, 40,000+ Gross tons.
A hawespiper can begin at 18 but you need 1080 sea days just to get a 3rd, and then another 360 to upgrade to 2nd and another 360 to even sit for a C/M exam. That is 6 years of sailing almost literally every single day just to be able to take the test.
Or 4 years at an academy to get a 3rd, then the same 720 before you can take the C/M exam which is 2 years of sailing almost literally every single day just to be able to take the test.
I simply do not believe there are any 24 year old C/M on US flag unlimited tonnage vessel.
