DS was disappointed but with chin up last night. He exhuausted all of his chances for a nomination to USAFA. With no LOA to USAFA, I was wondering if there is any hope for an appointment to USAFA. He is qualified and blessed to have a full appointment to USCGA. He is medically waived and nominated for consideration to USMA.

No nom = next to no chance to USAFA.

Congrats on appointment to USCGA!

Still a chance for USMA with a nom and 3q.

It is February 1.

Call your MOC/Senator to find out if s/he (or IT as I would prefer to call politicians) has awarded nominations. Maybe IT doesn't let people know until Feb? So,

NO NOMINATION = NO USAFA

However, NO LOA = NO LOA. This doesn't mean there is no nomination, it just means that your DS is one of the majority who DID NOT RECEIVE AN LOA.

DS spread his chances ... Congressman nominated him only to his second choice - USMA, Senator#1 denied him for USAFA, Still waiting for Senator#2 for USNA. We live next to a huge AF base so the odd for USAFA stacked against him. He was awarded a scholarship with airfare to USAFA for the summer experience and loved every minute. Hopefully, the superintendent will see something in him for either a nomination with an appointment or a prep scholarship. Based on the previous class profile, I believe his grades and SAT are too high for prep and too low for LOA.

Civil prep and prep school offers can still be made without having a nomination. Also, VP nomination and superintendent nomination are both still remote possibilities. It’s not over until you get a TWE.
I did not know that the superintendent can nominate candidates without LOA.

Even after you get the TWE you can be appointed. A current cadet 4th class that I know was rejected in April and received a very exciting phone call from her MOC in May. It isn't over until the start of BCT.

It’s a Hail Mary pass....but still a hope. Thankfully your child still has options with USMA and USCGA!

That's not true when one doesn't have a nomination.

Sorry a USAFA nomination didn't come through. This is why I always recommend not gaming the system but instead always list your choices in order of preference. This isn't a criticism of you or your DS at all, I only include it for lurkers. Of course, my opinion and 5+ bucks can get you a flavored latte. It's worth what you pay for it; my opinion, not the latte.

I personally know of at least three now Active Duty officers who found out in MAY that they could report on I-Day. IIRC, someone on here a couple years ago found out early June.

Of course, if the answer is indeed No thank you, go ahead with your Plan B (which you kept open in your back pocket), and apply again. Do very well academically, join local ROTC, really ramp up your athletics.... you get the idea. Lots of ppl get in on their 2nd try

I had a nomination and did not receive an appointment for c/0 2022; however, I did receive a Falcon Foundation Scholarship(civilian prep school scholarship) along with my TWE in March. I'm not sure if you need a nomination to get the scholarship, but I wouldn't make any hasty decisions or jump to conclusions until you get that TWE!

He sounds highly qualified. Don't think about the LOA.
It isn't finished until he receives a TWE or a 'not selected' on the portal. You just don't know.

Summer of 2014, our son boarded a plane to attend a Navy rowing camp that ran coincident with I-Day and sat next to a kid and his dad, both in Navy tee shirts. The kid had received his appointment just three DAYS prior (had a nom and a TWE) and had to scramble like mad to finally slide into that plane seat. They talked all the way there, exchanged e-mail addresses, and kept in touch from their different academies until the young man graduated last year. It ain't over 'til it's over.

Remember a few years ago, the Goat (bottom man/lowest GPA but still passing... in the class at USMA) was a guy who received his acceptance the day before R-Day.
You just don't know.

Like has been before and in other threads....there are quite a few discretionary nominations. The President, the Vice Pres, anyone related on AD?, theres one...anyone Disabled Service Connected? Another, plus the Superintendent has discretion in offering appointments depending on need. I would hate to think that candidates are off on vacation in June, travelling and getting a call to report ready to the Academy the next day, it would be a zoo! But the bottom line is if they REALLY want you, even without a NOM you are in.... Every Academy has a mechanism for these situations..

Thank You ... I have never seen my DS worked so hard to apply to USAFA. Even with an appointment to USCGA and a full-ride scholarship to a civilian university, he is still holding on to the dream of attending USAFA.
