No-Running Running Workouts

Do you have stairs available? They are great for workouts HIIT workouts. As a matter of fact, when I’m on the road I will take the stairs in hotels all the time.
Work on your legs. Things like lunges and air squats. Goggle “body weight workouts”. Many will over look weight training their legs. MJ mentioned Stew Smith. He has some of this workouts on his website.
Thank you for your advice; I do, in fact, have plenty of stairs in my house and will, starting today, make good use of them! As for the lunges and air squats, I've been doing some but will pump that up more.

If you absolutely can’t run outside and don’t have access to a treadmill, do some burpees. They’re a Naval Academy favorite especially at Plebe workouts and can be done with no equipment with minimal space. Not a perfect substitute for running but they’ll keep up your cardiovascular fitness. You can either look up a HIIT burpee workout online or simply aim to complete a certain amount within a given time, maybe a hundred or two. I knew a mid who did a thousand in one day. He ended up going SEALs...
Thank you for the reply. Do you advise doing them with or without pushups? When I was doing PT at a USMC recruiting office this summer, we did both, so I'm not sure which is better.

Incorporate squats, curls, presses, rows, push-ups into the Burpee, AKA Manmaker. @Capt MJ and @Casey , I swear I didn't come up with the name. The name is changing with the times according to who is the instructor.
Thank you for your advice. Will try incorporating some of these to spice things up!

My DD used my Beachbody videos - P90X, P90X3, & Insanity. She customized and did doubles from Spring Break to I-Day, plus did running every other day (she ran very little mileage - 1-3 miles each time) and a stretching session before bed. She did Ab Ripper every day and was like Adam, a hotshot and put her hands over her head the entire time. She was in excellent shape for all things BCT/PFT/AFT. My videos are old and are skipping/freezing, and we only have 1 laptop that you can insert a disc. I'm toying with buying the streaming, unlimited for about $100/year, but there are plenty of free workouts online, including for you parents! I am going to do some of the Richard Simmon's Sweating to the Oldies that are on youtube now!

Jumping rope is a phenomenal work out. There is a reason boxers utilize it. A good leather jump rope is relatively inexpensive too. Make certain to get the appropriate length.

Either way is a good workout, but if you’re following a resistance training program (which you should be if you’re in good health) then the pushups are redundant. I’d just do a do normal burpees for cardio, and you can do pushups as part of your strength routine. That’s just what I would do, of course there are many paths to improving endurance and strength.

If you have enough space, sprinting workouts can be good. In wrestling, we sprint back and forth across the mats and crawl back on the last one. This would also help with the shuttle run portion of the CFA. Good luck!

Another thought. If you don’t have access to running, what about hiking? I will often hike when I have overnights in locations where running was difficult. Hong Kong, mainland China, Japan, Hawaii, Latvia, Istanbul, Dubai, Korea... many other locations. I did the round trip from my hotel near the Hale Koa to Diamond Head several times. Throw some weight in a backpack to make it more challenging, but nothing crazy.

Flashbacks to all of us in girls gym class in leg warmers and working out to Richard Simmons and then Jane Fonda videos. UGH
There’s a funny line (at least for those of us from the “Flashdance” era) in the brilliant TV series “The Americans,” which takes place in the early 1980s.

Teen Daughter: “Mom, can I get a ride to the mall?”

Mother: “Paige, how many pairs of leg warmers do you need?”

I bought all of his Sweatin Videos on Prime! I love how he interpreted & sold the exchange plan (Deal A Meal, Food Mover) making it easy to use. I made my own Deal A Meal cards too. :)

He was something else. Would see him in the yard in his coat and tie pedaling along on an old English style bicycle with his briefcase strapped to the back. Never missed an opportunity to get in some exercise.
