No appointment will be available to USMMA without a nomination, whether or not you are recruited for a sport. Also, there are no Presidential or Vice-Presidential nominations to USMMA like the DoD academies. If your son is now interested in USMMA, I would suggest that your son complete his application as soon as possible. He may still be able to get a nomination to USMMA in one of two ways. He should reach out to his two Senators and the Representative for your District and see if he might still be able to get a nomination. In some Districts where USMMA is less well known, there are sometimes more available nominations than qualified candidates. So if he applied for a nomination to USNA, they may allow him to switch his preference to USMMA. The other lesser known option is that a USMMA nomination can come from ANY representative in your home state, not just in your District. Your son may be able to call around to other Districts in your state and find a Representative who has not filled all his or her nominations to USMMA and will consider adding your son. Not all Representatives realize that they can nominate outside their District for USMMA, but they definitely can. Let me know if you have other questions. Good luck.
