Hello there,

I hope you are all doing well! This is my first time here and posting a question. I have seen all the advice from others and love such a helpful community.

I have a quick question. I am writing my essays for the NROTC application and one of the questions asks me about living in another country. Here is the question:
"Have you lived in a foreign country or experienced another culture during 7th through 12 grades? If so, provide the reason for living overseas or in another culture, the location and the dates of the experience. (Limit 2500 characters)"

How should I address this question? Should I bullet the different places I have been to and add a small description of why I went and what I experienced? Or should I write an essay picking one or two of the most significant travel experiences I have had?

Example:
- Czech Republic, August 2022, Visited family and local towns. I got to try some of the traditional foods and saw dances.
OR
Over the Summer, I went to India for one month. I got to experience a big Indian wedding...(expand on the whole experience)

Please let me know. I appreciate all the help:)

I initially just did bullet points (your first example), but then my coordinator advised me to write a little bit more, so I expanded and wrote what I learned while there, and how I used what I learned through my travels in my life.

I agree with @washedturtle. I advise my students to provide more details, experiences, and learning. Use both of the trips that you noted, or more, if they are appropriate. Good luck!

Going more in depth is probably better than just a list of where you’ve been.

Also btw this prompt isn’t restrictive to just living in or visiting foreign countries. I wrote about living in Brooklyn.

While not a golden rule by any means, I recommend that applicants pay attention to the character limit. In your examples, each consumed around 120 to 150 characters. The application allows for 2500 characters.

There is no specific right or wrong way to approach questions like these, but as others mentioned, you should comment on what you enjoyed or learned from seeing other cultures. And perhaps there was something unpleasant you experienced, and that could be addressed in the essay on adversity. Just tossing up ideas for you to think upon.

Thank you so much, everyone! I really appreciate all the responses:)
