My son is currently a 2/C NROTC student who is considering Naval Aviation. He recently met with an LT at his unit who recommended he have LASIK before second semester. Does the Navy cover this procedure for NROTC MIDS? If so, how do we proceed?

Unless something has changed very recently, there is no Navy medical coverage for any conditions whatsoever, unless a person sustained an injury during a summer training event.

And while I am not a naval aviator, I would strongly recommend an optometrist's recommendation before choosing which type of Lasik surgery to undergo.

Got it, thank you!

I can't speak to NROTC medical coverage, but DS just did dual eye PRK yesterday at Walter Reed (he's a 2/C at USNA), Lasik was not an option for him if he wanted aviation (I'm not a doctor and don't play one on tv, just passing on what he was guided to choose).

It's worth noting that USNA Mids are in fact covered for medical items in most cases whereas NROTC is a different animal.

Yup, 100% coverage while attending USNA. That was something we discussed when he was making his decision as to which path to take.

If going for aviation-it is also worth it to have the same eye exam that you will get if you get selected aviation in my opinion. There are other non-waiverable eye issues that can disqualify you that aren’t remedied by PRK/LASIK that you might not be aware of unless you’ve had a flight exam. Better to know before putting in your list for service assignment.
