I mentioned this before. DS started a NROTC-MO application about three weeks ago, really just to start looking it over, with the plan to complete and submit the application by early August. Well, he was immediately contacted by a Marine Captain to advise him his interview would be on July 16th. O.K., the sooner the better. DS just got back from Boys State on Saturday and hasn’t finished his application. He got another e-mail today from the Marine Captain suggesting he get the application completed before the interview and bring with him all the completed forms. O.K,, yes sir, no problem. QUESTION: Is it usual for an officer coordinator to push the process like this? (I am not complaining, this guy seems to really be on-the-ball and I think that is a good thing.)

I think that is positive. There are many instances where the coordinator is not engaged, making the process more difficult. My DS had a similar timeline when he went through the process. Just make sure that the essays and application are complete and where they need to be. Is he going to do the PFT on the 16th as well?

Any opportunity your DS has to build a rapport with the coordinator is a good thing.

Not sure yet when he will be doing the PFT. I was fortunate to get him an appointment for an annual physical for next week. He needs to get the doctor to sign permission for him to take the PFT. He is still training for the pull-ups. He was hoping that he would have more time to train before he takes the PFT. The officer coordinator said he would be able to re-take it later.

Correct. No penalty for this like the AROTC. My DS took his first PFT the day of his interview. He did well, but wanted to take it again. He worked out on a regular basis at the local RSS and coordinated the re-take with the staff there. I think he ended up with a 290. As has been discussed, pull-ups is where you "make the money" on the USMC PFT. Huge penalty for not maxing out and huge plus for maxing out. Best of luck to your son, I have enjoyed reading about his journey.

I don't have a problem with bringing everything with him. I would be cautious to submit it until he feels it's the best application package he can put together (aside from the PFT which he can retake). The coordinator may just want to review stuff and make suggestions while checking for completeness.

So, included in the forms that the officer coordinator e-mailed to my son are a request for H.S. transcript and the teacher evaluations. Aren’t those items that will be automatically sent directly to the school and teachers when he submits his application on-line? Why would DS need those?

My son just received the 2021 MO ROTC scholarship. He brought with, and turned in a copy of all of his awards, recognition, etc. We put it in a 3 hole folder, and page protectors. He put in copies of things like Eagle Scout, NRA awards, school awards, etc. I don’t know if others did this, but in my opinion it worked! (😉)

My DS took his first PFT the day of his interview.
It would be bad-a$$ to go to the interview, take off your sport coat, roll up your sleeves at knock out 23 pull-ups in your shirt and tie. But somehow, I don't think that is going to happen (DS is not yet ready to max-out yet.)

Sometimes they just surprise you with the PFT

I would suggest that your DS ask the question regarding the PFT. It is very common for them both to be done on the same day. I am aware of 2 interviews conducted in the last week that did include the PFT with the interview. It sounds like your DS's coordinator is engaged, so I am sure he/she will communicate the plan.

Hello all,

I am following this thread because DS s about to send in application for NROTC-MO. He has been in email contact with the coordinator requesting an opportunity to speak/meet/intro himself before sending in but no response yet. These posts have generated a few questions: Where does he get a release form to take to a Dr. to get permission to take the PFT? DS has his regular annual physical with pediatrician later this month so is there a form I can take to have him sign giving him permission to take the PFT whenever it is scheduled? Also, I see mention of the possibility of a PFT and Interview on the same day - crazy question but do they bring PT gear, shower gear and interview suit to change into? Perhaps interview then change into PT gear is easier - is this a thing? Thoughts?

Thank you for your guidance.

I believe the form to take to the physician to give clearance to take the PFT is available on-line when you start an application. In our case the officer coordinator also e-mailed us the form.

I don’t know when they are going to schedule the PFT. If they give DS a choice he will request that it be on a different day than his interview. If not, he will have to bring workout clothes and shoes. I may tell him to bring workout clothes and running shoes just in case they pull a fast one on him. I don’t want him running three miles in dress shoes! LOL

Thank you - we will check out the website for the PT Permission form and ask his contact. I guess it would be nice to complete the PFT and the interview in the same day to keep the process moving - hoping that is an option for DS.

The average score on the PFT for scholarship winners is about 270. So, it is best to be ready to put up a good score when you take it. Although you can re-take it I am told.

For my son who applied last year, the PFT and interview were held on the same day.
All the candidates were instructed to arrive in PT gear and take the PFT first.
Then they announced all the PFT scores—in order from best to worst.
The candidates who did not score above a certain threshold were sent home.
The candidates who scored above a certain cutoff changed into suits/interview outfits and had their interviews. Candidates were interviewed in order—starting with best PFT score first to lowest PFT score last.

There were no showers available at that location. We sent our son with a towel and stick of deodorant. :)

Thanks for the report! I will pass it on to DS

Wow, very efficient and organized. Hope it is that smooth for my DS. Thank you for the breakdown.

So, DS’ interview is scheduled for 7/16, a week from tomorrow. Today he got a call from a staff sergent who reports to the captain who is the officer coordinator. He invited DS to do some PT in the park on Friday. It couldn’t hurt. However, I get the impression that they are working on DS from two angles. They probably want to try to get him to enlist if he doesn’t get the scholarship.

My experience is only via NROTC app for our son. The local recruiter invited him to participate in workouts and PT training. He knew our DS was SA-focused with NROTC as a backup. He never pushed enlistment and supported him 100%. His coordinator was a great communicator and encouraged him to complete his application (done well, not rushed or shoddy) for the 1st board. They were very encouraging.
I would encourage your DS to be solid in the interview. My DS said it was as tough as any he did for SA's or member of congress panels.

Good luck to everyone this cycle.

While possible, all it takes is a 'No' on enlistment. Provided it's financially possible to attend college without the scholarship, he should enroll in NROTC any and compete for scholarship opportunities as a Midshipman.
