DS will be applying for a NROTC—MO scholarship later this summer. I have read that it can help a candidate to do PT with the local Marines so they get to know you. (We have a Marine Corps Reserve Base in town). DS is doing PT on his own, of course. Would it be also helpful to contact the local recruiter or the officer coordinating recruiter to find out how he can hook-up with some local marines?

I would try the officer coordinating recruiter first and then the local recruiter. Folks about to enlist in the Corps (poolees) work out together with the local recruiter. If he does work through the local recruiter be sure they understand he is interested in NROTC and not interested in enlisting. Occasionally recruiters get carried away with meeting their quota, as that's their job. As long as he's clear with them and reviews anything he might have to sign (do they need a release for injury?) then he will be fine.

BTW, I'm not sure if getting to know them provides any benefit but working out with the group can.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, not sure he needs to work out with the poolees. He has his cross-country team and NJROTC buddies at the local gym to work out with.

I would recommend that he maintains his current work out company. No real benefit to work out with the poolees, especially as they are more than likely in a lot worse shape than he is.

Hi- Last summer my son did the delayed entry program, and started working out with Poole's at the Marine Office. He was clear from the beginning that he wanted to go for the MO -ROTC scholarship. His intent was always to go to College. His plan A- was the scholarship, his plan B was Boot Camp, School, and then start College in Jan. with the GI Bill as a reserve. He worked out with the Poole's, showed initiative, and leadership. Improved his fitness score, and.... was chosen for one of the 4, 4 year MO- ROTC scholarships! I would definitely say that working out with the Marines helped my son earn the scholarship. He was in good shape, letter award winner in Cross Country, Football, and Soccer. However, the dedication, and the leadership opportunities helped him earn excellent support from the recruiters and their Captain.
