I am currently waiting on the 4-year national NROTC scholarship, however, I applied to the 5-year NPP scholarship at Norwich a few months ago as a backup and just got word that I was awarded it. The problem is I have until March 16th to either accept or reject it, and I'm not sure if I should accept it and close opportunities for everything else or wait till the deadline if I still haven't heard anything from the 4-year. Norwich isn't my first choice for a school and I still have applications for NPP at the University of Idaho and Maine that I am finishing. Does anyone know what the NROTC is like at Norwich? Or does anyone have any information about what the prep scholarship is like specifically at Norwich? I don't have a problem with the corp of cadets and being a rook, just still unsure if I would prefer or benefit more from a normal college's NROTC. Thanks

Hi there! My DS is in a similar situation (for a different school). Have you tried asking for an extension for your decision? His initial email said they would consider an extension request.
My DS is trying this route. We’ll see - fingers crossed he gets it. It’s such an amazing opportunity but he’s not quite ready to commit. On the other hand, he knows he can’t walk away from that kind of opportunity. Tough position for you both to be in. Good luck 🍀 to you!

Thank you, I will ask them about an extension.
Give it a shot! My son asked for quite a bit of an extension - we’ll see what they say. His prospective coach at USMMA suggested he start with a longer period of time & see what they say…. Good luck!

A couple things to consider here. There is a 4 year scholarship board that will be reporting out this week or early next week. You can see if you get selected for that board and then decide.

Next, you mentioned a normal NROTC compared to the Prep scholarship. Norwich is a normal NROTC unit. The difference is you have the university covering your first year scholarship and if successful, you then get a full 4 year scholarship.

All the units have good points about them, but Norwich has always been among the better of the NROTC units.

Only you can decide what's right for you. But I can tell you there are dozens of high school seniors who would LOVE to be in your shoes right now.

💯 agree with this statement! It’s a fantastic opportunity. Thank you for providing the info about this gem a few years back. Our DS did get a few extra weeks to decide but we made it very clear that if he asked for the extra time then he needs to be ready to make a decision at that point. He’s holding out a little bit longer for USMMA but there is no way he’s walking away from this opportunity if USMMA hasn’t made a decision by then. It’s actually the #1 choice for his dad & I but we get him not being ready to give up on his first choice…. The coach at USMMA knows this new wrinkle. We’ll see what happens by April 1st.
