NSI Cancelled?

I don't know folks - unless you think it's misinformation from multiple sources, would anything other than a direct notification satisfy a need to not waste time preparing for NSI this summer (until that official word comes out)? Multiple reports shared they've heard directly from their chain of command that NSI is canceled this year. Tough to tell tone or intent in board messages, so I'll just express mine today is with positive intent, and is for whimsy, camaraderie and fun (we're all figuring this out, together).

again just for fun, we can imagine this conversation Scene: Ohio State, NROTC cadet's dorm, as everyone prepares to go home for the semester/ until Covid isolation ends...
Unit Commander (quizzical): "What are you doing, Cadet?"
Cadet, snapping to attention: "Sir. Packing for NSI, Sir - just in case."
Unit Commander (smallest frown appears): "Just in case? Haven't I already informed you, directly, that NSI is canceled?"
Cadet (stands a little taller): "Sir, well yes Sir. But see, Sir, I didn't hear it from national command - you know, officially."
Unit Commander: (Frown deepens, inhales deeply, pauses, points to The Shoe (Ohio Stadium). "So just curious Cadet, what am I to you, your cousin Wilbur from Kalamazoo? See that horseshoe monstrosity over there? Take a moment and hydrate. You're about to become familiar with every stair in that stadium":)

I don't think anyone is questioning IF NSI is cancelled, but why would you not follow the instructions you have been given by NSTC? Your unit and NSTC are 2 separate entities. To my knowledge, NSTC has not notified mids yet that NSI is cancelled. The advice was - continue sending in your paperwork as requested.

I think the delay in notification is to allow some units some time to develop alternate summer training plans.

I'm not sure how word will come down to incoming mids, since they have been assigned to a unit, but have not reported yet. For mids already in the program, all communication comes directly from their unit. My DS, who is a rising 1/c, was informed by his CO that he had received notification from NSTC that NSI is cancelled, Seat Trials in Newport are cancelled and all foreign exchange cruises are cancelled. The remaining summer training is still being evaluated and more information will be forthcoming. There is no harm in continuing to prepare for NSI, physically, knowledge wise and getting paperwork in order. These things will benefit them when they report to their units anyway.

The official word from NSTC is that NSI is cancelled. NROTC at VMI has been stellar about keeping MIDN informed, and attached is an excerpt from the latest update that was pushed on Friday, 10 April 2020. I hope this helps!

Agree with @EEBTTF . The information may be pertinent to more than NSI. One will also need to prepare physically anyway, if they want the scholarship to be activated.

My son is an incoming freshman to the VMI NROTC Unit. We've heard nothing from the unit in regards to NSI being canceled. I've also been in contact with other incoming freshman parents who have yet to hear from the unit.

My DS who will be a 1/C and part of his Battalions "Big 6" was told that NSI is canceled and as a Company leader he will be helping lead on campus orientation the week before classes start in the fall.

It will be interesting to see how units handle indoctrinating freshman into NROTC now that NSI is cancelled. For my unit, I heard that first semester was supposed to be tougher on freshman but was easier for us since we already "paid our dues" so to speak at NSI and came in pretty well trained.

DS received his email from Candidate Midshipman Guidance Office in Great Lakes that NSI is canceled today. The email contains other info/instructions pertinent to all that. Nothing from his unit yet but assume that is forthcoming.

Now that NSI is officially cancelled, individual units will contact the Mids and give guidance on what the plan is.

Good question. Many units have already contacted their Mids. I think some schools are trying to schedule an on campus indoc, similar to what was done prior to NSI. My guess is you should hear something in the next few weeks.

My DS is a rising 1/C and he was already in a meeting to discuss arriving on campus about 2 weeks early to help conduct new Midshipman orientation. Last year was first NSI so it's back to the way orientation was conducted before.

That's unfortunate this is happening. From what the upperclassmen in my unit said, NSI has produced night and day MIDN compared to previous classes that hadn't gone to NSI. For me personally, it was hard but fun in a lot of ways, and very cool to be at Great Lakes Naval Station.

I hope that the incoming 2024 class will have the opportunity to go to NSI their rising 3/C summer, but I don't see that happening.
