NSI - support for parents

I would also be interested in the private parents group.

My son is currently attending NSI 2. Our family does not have a military background and we are really struggling with the whole process- the lack of ability to contact him, see him, even just text him- all of it. I have no doubt he will do great and he is very excited about his future. But from the parent perspective, it has been incredibly difficult to let go. It broke my heart to walk away from the drop off at Great Lakes. I feel like the next two weeks will be an eternity. I greatly appreciate all the positive and supportive messages on this forum.
Is your son attending Texas A&M?

Good morning,
My son will be attending NSI 3 and was wondering if anyone could clarify the “proper civilian attire” on the packing list?
Thank you in advance and for raising selfless men/women willing to serve. My father is a Navy veteran and I have a brother-in-law USNA 82 and a nephew USNA 12. Although my heart is heavy as my oldest embarks on this adventure, I am proud beyond words.

If you go to DVIDS, search NSI, filter by past month, you will see pix of new arrivals from NSI 2. Polo shirt and khakis seem to be pretty standard. My DS will be NSI 3, too. Marine Option.

I just looked on NETC NROTC website and they’ve posted graduation link for Cycle 2 grad tomorrow, July 17 at 9:00am CDT
It’s under NSI, in the middle of the page, “NSI 2023 Graduation“

However, the link on NETC site goes to the DVIDS site, which indicates the start time as 9:40 Eastern time (even though Great Lakes is Central)---
Screen grab says:

Scheduled from Jul 17 2023 9:40 AM EDT to Jul 17 2023 10:50 AM EDT
NROTC NSI Cycle 2

(Also, DVIDS countdown timer on website says event will begin in 9 hours; as I calculate using my Pacific current time of 9pm, the start time would be 6:40am Pacific, 7:40 Mountain, 8:40 Central.)
???

Thank you, yes I have been searching any site I can find. Appreciate you time.
Does anyone know of sites other than FB for us still living in the Stone Age?

Son just returned - he had two polos (one on , one in the backpack) and two pairs of pants. They were worn the first day, and I believe the second, then put in a plastic bag and squirreled away for 2.5 weeks - we will deal with the stench today (along with all other issued items). I believe he would have enjoyed having a set that remained cleaned and was able to be worn home on the plane last night - but alas, he stayed in uniform and looked AWESOME!

And even if you have an older kiddo, DVIDS is still a great site for potential training pics. According to my daughter, the ship’s DVIDS photographer is frequently tired of shooting the crew after a while and flocks to newbies whenever they do anything remotely interesting.

Here my daughter is firing a .50 caliber machine gun in 125° temps on the open seas of SW Asia during her post junior year cruise on a DDG. Wish I’d have of found this sooner! Thanks DVIDS!

My son is at NSI 3, Marine Option, as well. If anyone has info on where to find the social media pages for pictures and any other parent forums, I would love to know what they are. Thank you!

The DVIDS is where the social media pages get there photos, so this is your best bet for finding photographs. There is a FB page for NROTC MIDN Parents and Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps-NROTC that are also good.

What’s the $300 for? I can see that my DD spent money at the NEX, but if everything is issued, what did she have to buy?

I believe the uniforms are no charge, but toiletries, some clothes, shoes?, and some other items are not included. That some other misc stuff is paid by candidate.

DS said that he used about $250 of the pre-paid card for all of the issued gear they received at the recruit processing center during the first few days and that they got to visit the actual NEX and spend the rest at their discretion around day 5. He has a receipt that shows all of what was purchased/issued.
