Offered second CVW

Invitations are not automatically generated, the admissions office decides who they are going to send them out to based on criteria known only to them. Last year DS did not get an invitation, this year as a re-applicant he did. I don't know why but we are pleased at the opportunity! Many people get appointments without attending a CVW however.

In the past , Candidates were not given the opportunity to do a CVW and Summer Seminar. At one point in recent years, the message went out that every Candidate would be offered a CVW, but I think that was backed down with the reality that USNA simply doesn't have that much capacity. Now it is kind of as ALW notes, offered by Admissions based upon unknown criteria. If you want to attend a CVW, I recommending letting your BGO know, and he/she can submit a request. In addition, I would expect a timely submission of application is helpful.

Finally, don't fret if you get an invite and can't make it ...many Candidates don't attend for a variety of reasons, including HS activities, too far, too expensive. If you get invited and can't intend, I would encourage telling your BGO , so he/she can comment on that the fact that your declining a CVW is not an indication of lack of interest.

Agreed. My MID got an invitation to CVW around February, but didn't politely decline. He just didn't answer. I heard about a month later and almost fell over. I told him they probably use it to gauge interest. He ended up with an appt a few weeks later, but sheesh....
 
My son was offered a second CVW as well. The CVW invitation came after he had already submitted his application, so at first I thought maybe it was a mistake. (Should have known: no mistakes! ;)

He had attended CVW this past winter as a junior and also Summer Seminar this past summer. Great experiences, both, obviously or he wouldn’t have applied in July. 😂 But now he’s just 1 year younger than most of the plebes — and got to see a whole other set of courses (1st semester vs 2nd semester), and get to know more people. My son went because he saw it as an opportunity to prepare. (Also to be honest I don’t think we could have kept him away!) This fall CVW seems to be more for seniors – and honestly I think it hits different. The classes seem a lot more familiar like you could really see yourself there. You see the PT or other activities you can’t participate in (darn rules) but you want to! You cheer on the soccer team and feel like you’re cheering for your own. I-day is like eight or nine months away at this point. It’s getting real. More than real. And a final look if you get the chance to doubly or triply confirm? Especially if you don’t come from a family with a lot of SA experience (or any!)? Jump on it if you can. It’s not a mistake!

Curious - our DD is a plebe right now, but DS is a Junior, and USNA is his #1. How did you communicate interest to be invited to a CVW in the Winter of his junior year?

Has he politely reached out to his area BGO to introduce himself and express his interest? I would start there.

He has not. We figured the BGO is hip deep in interviews for the Senior year, and did not want to pile on to their load. I will talk with him about it. . .I am sure he would love to experience life on the Yard!

It's nice that you are cognizant of the BGO's busy schedule. Still couldn't hurt to reach out, if they have time I am sure they will respond. USNA encourages BGO's to become involved with potential candidates early in the process.

My son sent in his Summer Seminar application (aka preliminary application to USNA) in early January of his junior year. The invitation to CVW came a few weeks later and he jumped on it.

DS went to NASS in 2016 and also attended a CVW, not sure if they still offer both.
He also received a Nomination
He also received a TWE

This description of the fall CVW experience for seniors differing from the spring was helpful - thanks for sharing. Did your son retake the CFA at the fall CVW, or was it offered to be taken? Pull-up fitness does not happen overnight.....

@Old Navy BGO

My DS received another CVW invite recently a few weeks after receiving his LOA late September. He had attended a CVW in Spring and Summer Seminar in the summer. He has received his nomination interviews for November. Would you suggest that he attend the 2nd CVW? BTW he is recruited for Navy Rugby. Thanks.
 
Is it his first choice, or is he on the fence?? If first choice and he's going to push the button if all LOA requirements are fulfilled, then I'd say don't bother doing another CVW. If still on the fence, may be worth another look. 🤷‍♂️

I attended two, once as an applicant and once as an appointee who accepted the appointment. I thought the second CVW was more valuable than the first. My mindset was different between them. I felt like a guest just visiting for the first one (which I was), but the second had a different tone. I had a general idea of what USNA was about and how it operated from the first CVW, so I was made my second visit a bit more deliberate. I was more focused on asking about plebe life and envisioning myself as mid more. I felt that the plebes I was with were also more candid with their answers to my questions since I was already committed.

TLDR: I think a second third to Annapolis is worth it. You can ask more poignant questions and really take the time to see yourself as a mid. You can ask yourself if you truly want to do it.
