Official USAFAPS (Prep School) Class of 2013 Appointment thread

I have been told by more than one official source that the LEAD nomination does not carry over, and that we are required to seek a nom from all possible sources.

However, all unofficial sources, including you, have stated that we do not need a nomination.

When I was at the prep school, I didn't pursue a nomination at all. Reason: The admissions people told us at a briefing that our nomination would carry over, and the first MOC I called said, "We're going to give our nomination to someone who actually needs it." From there, I just let my nomination carry over. If you are wanting to make absolutely sure, open up the application page, https://admissions.usafa.edu/secure/online/onlineapplication.exe, and see if your nomination is there. Mine was. Again, if you want to err on the side of caution, I'd do it, but I never did. I got my appointment.

I just wanted to wish jwalsh1 good luck at I-day this coming week. Thanks for all of your input on these forums as a prior enlisted/Prep school cadet candidate. :thumb:

Skymom

Thanks Skymom and 2bornot2b! With I-Day closely approaching, I'm getting ready by packing, checking my paperwork, etc.

I just hope everything goes smoothly for you guys! A lot was learned from this past year, and there is a new commander. I also heard you guys are getting cadre from the cadet wing to come down and run basic this year. Trust me, your class will need the discipline. For the priors, trust me when I say that, because this year, we had people mouthing off to Majors, LtCol's and whatnot like it was nothing... That is why they are bringing back the cadet cadre.

Last minute advice:

As much as the priors might hate it, the priorities for a military school are sort of out of whack. In my opinion, I saw it like this: Sports teams > Academics > PT > everything else in the world > oooo a penny > military discipline. You will see favoritism, special treatment, lack of concern for the rules, etc. Do your best to ignore it. I tried to raise my voice about it, and then it was shut down by the Full Bird that is in charge of the football program.

Learn how to do hospital corners. You have to make them almost the whole year, and next year, you will have to make them the whole year. I used to iron my corners to make them look better. I would also make my bed with only one of the sheets if I could get away with it. I would put that extra sheet over the rest of my bed so I didn't mess it up when I slept.

Do you best. This seems like a no-brainer, but there are people who just sit around and let things happen. They are the ones that get everyone else in trouble. Don't think "so and so is getting away with it, so can I" because as soon as you try, you'll be the one to have an example made of.

If you absolutely need to pass out and take a nap during the day, we got away with taking a nap between the bed and the closet. It is the only area of the room you can't see walking by. Granted, there were 2 AMT's and like 77 of us, so I don't know how well it will work with cadet cadre.

As of now, I can't think of anything else, but if I do before I-Day, I'll make sure to head on over and post it! =D Best of luck you all of you!

If any of you Appointees or parents need anything this year, please feel free to message me. I'm right here and happy to help if I can.

ALL Preppies (Prior and Directs) will apply to their Senators and Congressperson for a nomination to USAFA for the class of 2013. I recommend contacting their offices now to make your life easier once you have reported to Prep.

Scratcher,

Do many of the LEAD cadet candidates get nominations from Senators, Congressman & the VP? They're competing with HS students with 3.9 unweighted GPAs. Is the Prep school commander a possible nominator for USAFA?

Thanks,

Skymom

Yes a number of the Preppies do get nominations from their Senators and Congress person. No the Prep School Commander is not a nomination source, that is why it is so important to secure a Congressional Nomination. I promise you, you will stress out all the way until Prep Graduation if you don't have a congressional. We don't want that for you or your Preppie.

For people coming in through LEAD, prior service students, their LEAD nomination carries over. To be honest, I didn't pursue a nomination outside of that, because 85 appointments can be given out from Active, and an additional 85 from guard/reserve. While prep students are technically enlisted, they fall under the guard/reserve category, and if worst comes to worst, they can be given a nomination under that. However, if you come from Active Duty, there is no way they will fill all 85 slots for that nomination source.

If you are a person who likes to caution on the side of err, nothing stops you from applying for outside nomination sources. Just be prepared for your MOC to tell you that, "Oh, you're in the prep school? I'm going to give my nomination to someone who ACTUALLY needs it then."

Remember, this is just my 2 cents, not the official answer.

As Walsh said at the end, this is not the official answer and has just enough information in it to be dangerous. I do not agree with the advice given above or the explanation of how the system works. I recommend following USAFA and USAFA Prep official guidance.

I like official vs unofficial.

If you look at the MEMORANDUM FOR CADET CANDIDATES SELECTS (Priors and Direct Entries), that is found on the numbered page 12, which is the 14th page of the document, in the Instructions to United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School Selectees, you will find this:

1. NOMINATION
1.1. Did the candidate obtain a new nomination? Nominations are only valid for one year. All candidates
must obtain a new nomination that is valid for the year that they will enter USAFA to be considered for an
appointment.
1.2. Did the candidate apply to all available nominating sources (apply to both Senators, the Representative
from their Congressional district, the Vice-President, and any military affiliated sources for which they are
eligible)?

I think this is about as "official" as you can get.

Agreed! Thank you!

As a prep schooler, there is no way I will be able to be interviewed by my MOCs this year, correct? I am going to call my MOCs offices tomorrow and explain the situation if this is the case.

I mean, isn't it a little late for us to get in touch with the officials we'll need nominations from? In-processing for us is right around the corner..for we priors anyway.

I'm sure we will have time to contact them once we get the P. I checked and, at least in my home state of California, the deadline for nomination packages is in November. We should be fine.

It will probably be a phone interview.

I recommend making contact with your Representative, and both your Senators right away and before you leave for USAFAPS. There may be required material and information you can put together, based on talking with them, that will be easier for you to obtain and compile where you are now, as opposed to waiting until you get to the P. I believe all the MOCs gave websites that have a link for Service Academy nomination instructions, as well. Every MOC is different, and has differing requirements and deadlines. You still have a few days left. Use your time wisely and make a few phone calls (keep written notes of your phone conversations for future reference) and check out your MOC websites. I am certain you will discover that you need to do certain things or gather together certain information, or accomplish certain tasks, and you will be glad you did these things before you go the P. Your time will be severely limited once you get there.

I am certain that the MOC interviews can be handled by phone, in your circumstances.

The problem is that most of us are not stationed close to home anyways. So it is still a pain to get all the required information. I've actually already built both nom packages for the California Senators (yep, found them online), and applied for the VP nom. The only reason I've decided not to send them is because I don't know what my mailing address at the P will be. This is the same reason why I have yet to contact my Rep, because they only mail out a package once you actually call them. If I supply one address and only one address (at the P), it will mitigate the risk of missing valuable correspondence. That's just my thought process behind the nomination issue. I've already considered my options and chose to proceed accordingly.

What to do?

I just got off the phone with my MOC's secretary in charge of nominations and she told me not to send anything in at this point. She said that a big part of the new information packet deals with stuff from the Prep school( grades, letters of recommendation, etc.). I asked her if I could possibly send some info now, because I'm not sure how I will get my hands on it will I'm in Colorado. She said that with almost 5 months till the deadline my stuff would surely get lost if I sent it in piece mail (my MOC's office is being moved due to redistricting so that may have something to do with it.) I guess, at this point, I'll just update my letter and my resume to the best of my ability and keep all of my existing info as organized as possible so my parents can send it to me later. Does anybody have a better suggestion?

Really, they are concerned with less than 5 months of school work and staff interaction from the Prep School?? Honestly, I'd trust a recommendation from my high school sports coach who knew me for more than 4 years than any of my previous college professors or AF supervisors.

My DS just called our MOC's office. The woman in the office emailed him just emailed him a bunch of information and forms. I haven't seen it, but we just spoke, and after he called and explained about being AD, and going to Prep, she emailed him the information.

It seems that if you can get it emailed to you, that might help.

Copy, I'll call them right now.

don't forget your two senators....

If you don't do it now, you will do it when you get here. If you wait until you get here it will be even later than it is now.
