Only have an ROTC nom from college this year...could I still get in?

Hey guys. I’m a reapplicant for USMA. Had an LOA last year with a JROTC nom and two congressional noms, but I didn’t get my medical waiver in time. I got it around October of this year, but I didn’t think I’d get it so I was focusing on college and DIDNT apply to my MOC’s. I have an SROTC nom and got a 3Q’d NWL letter a few days ago. I also know that USMA is doing rolling admissions for Class of ‘25 this year, and I feel that I may be on the NWL because I don’t have a congressional nom (I lived 2 hours away on campus anyways, and had no stable way to get home to my district to go to interviews). Had anyone been or heard of someone getting into WP with just an ROTC nom? How many ROTC noms are let in? Are appointments still being sent out in waves? My mind is racing and I have so many questions unanswered. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

1. Interviews are often done online via Zoom or something. You should have made the effort, especially this year.
2. It only takes 1 nom to get an appointment, but there are never guarantees. They take up to 20 each year from the ROTC nom pool, which includes JROTC applicants. They don't always take that many.

It will be interesting to see what happens here. But for readers, DONT leave anything within your control, undone. Specific to waivers, they can be different for ROTC and a SA anyhow. So even if this poster had not received an ROTC waiver, he could have via the SA. Or vice-versa. ROTC and a SA are two different things/processes. DODMERB doesn’t provide a waiver for either. ROTC or SA provides a waiver. So, specific to this post, even though a waiver was granted for ROTC, doesn’t necessarily equate to a waiver granted for a SA.

I would have thought, with a prior year LOA, that those MOC apps would have been done by day one. That was within ones control. Not the waiver piece. That is what people mean when they coach to ‘control the controllable ’.

To OP, your post read as ‘excuses’ to me. May not have been the intent, but sharing that in case you need to address why you didn’t apply to MOC’s in any way (essays, interviews, etc).

Never leave ANY opportunity untouched.

I don’t have an ROTC waiver yet, but I’m still apart of the battalion there.
I’m just not contracted. West Point is the only place I’ve received a waiver from so far. I completely understand what you’re saying, though to me it’s a little harsh, but if I have to do it all over again and fix my mistakes, I will. Thanks again.

Not at all trying to be harsh. I’m trying to be helpful. And also to help other readers that end up here. So you received a waiver from USMA in October, but didn’t apply to MOC’s bc you didn’t have the waiver yet? If I’m understanding this correctly, it’s a good thing for others to learn from...to not wait for DODMERB to clear, before applying for a nomination. Do those processes simultaneously.

Best of luck to you!

Yes, that is correct. I definitely have learned my lesson. If I don’t get an ROTC slot, or additional appointee slot, I’ll definitely have it all together for my third try. Thanks so much.

Always apply for all noms available. (No ride? Find one...if there’s a will, there’s a way). I regularly find applicants who haven’t applied for all possible nominations when doing interviews. Best of luck - and Beat WVA!

UPDATE: I GOT IN!!!! I got the acceptance in my portal today, but for anyone who ever reads this after me..... don't be like me and save yourself the stress.
So pleased for you. It truly only takes 1 nom (though more is always good), and clearly you stood out among the ROTC nom competitive group. Thank you for letting us know the outcome.
