If my dad gets a chance to talk to you at the dinner and hears about that, I can almost all but guarantee you he will rant about how he's been on the list for an incentive ride for F-4s and F-16s for over 20 years now and still hasn't gotten one. He bets that since he got Sr. NCO for the wing and state that he still won't be getting one.

He's a little bitter!

This is just a mother's observation but it seems that when my son asks people about the Academy (ALOs, alums, etc.) he gets lots of talk about how it's sooo difficult and he reallyyy has to want it and so on. It's the equivilant of "they're going to lock you in prison for four year because you'll appreciate your freedom more when they release you". Frankly, I'm getting a little tired of it. He knows he wants to be an Air Force officer and a pilot. His father was an Air Force pilot. I'm hoping that at orientation he'll hear a bit about the advantages of an Academy education.

The difference between us and other college bound students is that we have to grow up more quickly. While the other students are relying on their parents to pay for their tuition and come home anytime they please, we have to run on a strict schedule, often times not being able to depend on mommy and daddy for months at a time. We have already taken responsibility of ourselves by attending the Academy in the first place. What sets us apart from everyone else is that we will develop and learn essential skills needed in the real world. And the best part of it all is that we will have a guaranteed job coming out of college with a stable pay and good benefits. Find me another college student who gets a privilege like this.

i'm not on here much, so sorry if i'm missing some background BUT

yes, it's difficult, and yes he has to want it. that being said, don't let people who beat it over his head faze you as his mom.

i know my mom gets worked up whenever anyone says practically anything about the academy, whether it be how difficult it is and how they are surprised i'm here, or how it's not really as challenging as the other sa's because it's the air force (we get that one a lot). the fact of the matter is, yes, sometimes it can be depressing to hear that from people. but i knew what i wanted, and here i am. because he knows what he wants, i'm sure he'll be fine.

as for orientation, try to meet up with hornetguy cuz he's awesome and he'll elaborate on many of the cool programs we have (and he's taken/ing advantage of). the program itself is kind of death-by-powerpoint (but informative, nevertheless), but during breaks, cadets will walk around and answer questions. i highly recommend you take advantage of this
