They were actually the CC dinners that I set up, but it was both CC and SAF. I don't plan on planning them again this year, I'll let the younger whipper-snappers have at it this time. I'll be sure to post the events over here as it happens at CC.

Hey,

I attended Summer Seminar earlier this year, could anyone give me information as to how much more I may learn if I attend orientation than I did at SS? More specifically, could someone explain to me orientation in a little more detail?

I'm actually heading out about a week before I-Day. My parents kinda want to have a "vacation" with the family before I go, so they figured we'd just go there. Let's me get acclimated and get to explore Colorado Springs.

Garden of the Gods is a good day's fun.
Manitou Springs has a lot of shops and little things to do.
Visit the Academy if you want.
Elitch Gardens (Six Flags) up in Denver. Water park up there too.
Denver alone has plenty to do.

You can occuply yourself for a week there. ;) Lots of hiking and such around the Springs. Beautiful area.

Definitely if you're up for an hour drive to Denver there is a ton of stuff to do around there... And if we get enough snow here in CO *fingers crossed* some of the slopes might still be open so if you're a skier or snowboarder there might be a chance to do that for a day or so...

If you need more ideas I'll be happy to give suggestions!

As for what to do in C. Springs, first of all, get out of C. Springs. Honestly, there's not much to do there. Somebody mentioned the water park in Denver, and that is a must. There's a reason they call it Water World. I'll have to go one more time before my life begins. haha
Anyway, Denver is just an hour up the road, and that's where you'll find all the interesting things. There are a bunch of small venues scattered around the Colfax area where big bands tend to come play, and the CO music scene is solid, so even if you don't know the band check them out.
You'll find pretty much all the attractions of a moderately large city in Denver, so if you want to have some last minute fun, just explore the Mile High City.

and updating the Orientation list:

Are these dates official? I wonder because the April 13-14 date falls the day after Easter, April 12, which would be a required travel day for many people coming from out of town.

We had a great time at orientation and brought both guys and baby sister (17). My advice: bring good walking shoes, dress in layers, make your hotel reservations NOW. We went to Garden of the Gods, which was so completely different from anything near our home, we were flabbergasted.

Have a wonderful time, all!

It is interesting to go to the Olympic Training Center too, especially if your child is involved in any of the Olympic sports. Great tour, and it's free.

Since time is somewhat limited during this trip, we found it personally profitable to meet with other parents and incoming cadets in the lounge at the Academy Hotel (which was great, by the way). It was enlightening to meet ppl from this forum and CC, put names to faces, etc. and it was good for the kids too, since they "knew" someone when they arrived in CO two months later.

Two other awesome activities:

White water rafting and biking down Pike's Peak. (Just don't get going too fast or you'll get to see the nearest ED--ask my son....

There is a ton to do in the area. Rocky Mtn. National Park is also fairly close by. OOOOOh!....another awesome site is the Royal Gorge Bridge! You can easily spend an entire day there!

sigh.......Really, I want to move to COS!!!

Go to Taste of Philly in the Springs or Denver, great hoagies and cheese steaks. As close to a real one as you will find anywhere in the country outside of Phila. Also, Pudge Bros Pizza in the Denver MEtro area, I think they have a store in the Springs, is the best pizza I have ever tasted. I haven't had it in 10 years, hopefully it has not been changed. It was out of this world good.
