Platoon Leader Website

All of my friends that have left for BOLC as AD officers all got their ID cards at least a few days before leaving for BOLC or the day before they left, some a month before. They are AD as soon as their orders start, which is not the same day as their first day of BOLC. I guess it depends on the card office you go to and if they can pull you into DEERS, but with orders in hand and a start date, you should be good.

I'll second that statement.

My son's report date back in 2012 was June 1st, per his orders he was activated on May 25th, long travel time from Seattle to Ft. Rucker. His promotion to 1LT came exactly 18 months from May 25th.

He was told to just get his new CAC during inprocessing.

Hmm. DS's is, so not sure about that.

My son and other cadets still have their card, however they deactivated them when they were done with CULP. When they try to use it to "read their email" or whatever it is on sites that you "swipe it" it won't work.
It may have worked when he was at CTLT last summer but won't work now again.

At least that's what I've heard but I certainly do have my "pre-senior" moments so who knows!!

Maybe they just forgot to deactivate DS's card, but I know his still works and he went to CULP two summers ago.

I stand corrected, according to AR 600-8-29, "If the officer’s source of commission is the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), active duty service commences on the year, month, and day the officer enters active duty based on the computation of travel per the Joint Federal Travel Regulation (JFTR). An exception to this will be an ROTC graduate who is appointed and enters active duty in the month of May or June of the same year. His or her PED (promotion eligibility date) will be eighteen month from of the United State Military Academy (USMA) graduation of the year the officer entered active duty." However your promotion to 1LT is based on your commissioning source, your PED day and what time of year you commission, so its not always just 18 months later.

However, and this is what I messed up on is that your enrollment into DEERS is based on when you signed into you first AD station (ie first day of BOLC). They have to do a transaction in DEERS to update you into the system as active duty and that transaction cannot happen until within 5 days of sign-ing into your first active duty station (ie BOLC). Its only after that transaction goes through that you can get a CAC. Probably what happened with your friends is they were seeing them as reserve officers in the system and didn't ask for their unit information like they should. The card will still work but they might have issues with it later down the road which is why in my welcome letter to BOLC is specifically said to not try to get a card beforehand because of this issue.
