Plebe at USNA--give me your questions!

My son said they got a weekend ... iirc correctly it was the Air Force win.

I have a text in to him to confirm.

Yes....They were actually able to get Columbus Day Weekend because of the victory over Air Force. Since my son wasn't going to be able to get off the yard (sponsor was out of town), he went ahead and took the watch of someone who would be able to go. He was granted the following weekend.

My son already requested Columbus Day for his weekend ... so he gets another. My daughter and I picked him up and brought him to Inner Harbor in Baltimore Sat and Sunday night.

He was asked to take Veterans Day weekend watch for someone for 80 bucks. He said many are leaving the yard that weekend.

He is happy to be alone in quiet so he can watch YouTube and Netflix and sleep.

Besides that, retake your SAT/ACT as many times as you can--a higher score always makes you more competitive. The Academy super-duper-scores the SAT and ACT, meaning they take your highest ACT and transfer it to an SAT and then superscore your highest SAT scores from that. I only got a 29 on the ACT and a 1290 on the SAT, but with the super-duper-score, I was put at a competitive 1450.

^^^^
Could this be correct? Is 29 the ACT composite score? I believe USNA only considers Math and English ACT scores. Would they convert the ACT to SAT if that was beneficial to the candidate?
Its correct. They convert the Math and English ACT scores to an SAT equivalent and will take the highest combination of all tests taken. So they might take an ACT math (converted to SAT equivalent) and combine with the SAT Reading or vise versa.

So DS is at 29 ACT Math, 36 English and 33 Reading, would USNA use these scores or convert them to SAT concordance? Thank you Falconchic88, I’m just wondering if he is in a better position than he thinks?

Yes, they will convert the Math and English to SAT equivalent. They won't use the ACT Reading. They will then compare to SAT scores and use the highest combination. What are his SAT scores?
ETA: Actually I'm not completely sure what they currently do, as the new concordances combine the ACT english and reading. As of two years ago, USNA only converted the ACT English, not the Reading.

@23usna23 is there a lot of rivalry between companies (if so which one is yours rivals with)?
How often do plebes order out for dinner?

I haven't noticed rivalry in my battalion particularly. I am apart of 29th Company in 6th Battalion, but I do know of some companies that have rivalries between each other. Everything we do is a competition here, from Professional Knowledge exams to average GPA, so we are constantly competing with other companies to remain "6th Batt, Best Batt". Over Plebe Summer, you develop a good amount of "company pride"!

I order out for dinner about once a week.... maybe once every two weeks. It is highly recommended to go out into town on Saturday's, so I normally go grab a burrito bowl from Chipotle or a cup of ice cream. Friday nights are meant for studying Pro-Know, so most of us usually skip dinner and then make a mass Chipotle/Moe's/Papa Johns order. I do spend a LOT of money on snacks and coffee though. Once you discover the coffee stand in the library, there is no going back.

Yes! The 29 was composite. I got a 34 in math and a pretty low score in reading... I think it was a 22. BUT, my SAT reading was a 690, so the super-duper-score helped out a lot! If I'm being honest, most colleges should be doing this...too many people get set back because of standardized testing.

I wish I knew there was a training staff!! Most Plebes in my class did not know this! When they say "Plebe Summer never ends", they are right. It really doesn't end until Herndon, and I never understood why Herndon was such a big deal until now. It wouldn't have made much a difference when applying, but it might have helped me prepare mentally.

I also wish I prepared to follow bad leaders. Adult leadership is not involved unless its admin related. Overall, its kids training kids. The detailers, upperclassmen, and training staff are most likely going to be very new to leadership positions at the Academy. Don't expect great leadership from every single person. There are always problematic leaders, but what is important is that you learn how NOT to lead from them.

I wish I had a little more fun and saved more money before coming here. I saved up a good amount for this year, but others did not and they are struggling! Even though everything is free here, you'd be surprised how fast $125 leaves your pocket every 30 days.

@23usna23 Thanks for the great info! What do you mean "a training staff?"

I’ve been enjoying these “fresh-from-the-Yard” posts. USNA is one big leadership lab, with non-stop experiments going wrong, boiling over, teaching by failing and learning, occasionally getting it right by design or sheer luck, or exploding with varying degrees of mess. You will indeed build your own toolkit with a generous set of what-NOT-to-do tools.

Some leadership is innate and some is learned. Not everyone who shows up at USNA is ready to be a great leader.

One of the reasons for USNA is to help people learn how to be a good leader -- or at least a better one. Don't assume those who aren't great as upperclass won't be great in the fleet. Hopefully, they are learning from their experiences and the officers and senior enlisted are helping them in this process. That process will continue as a JO, when (again hopefully) the JO gets a great Chief and LPO and even Dep't Head who continue this process.

LOL my son got in trouble last night because he was writing a paper at 12:30 at night. Had to report to a meeting with his training officer tonight.

He is trying to do well academically! He doesn’t want to go because he said he is going to be made to do some **** - and he is too busy right now for that.
