Hello all,

Yesterday I received a principal nomination to USMA from my MOC. I've heard conflicting reports, so I was hoping someone could clear this up. What exactly does the principal nomination mean? Assuming you are 3Q'd, does it mean you are guaranteed an appointment?

I just got a principal as well. From what I've heard and seen, as long as I get 3Q'd, I'll get an appointment. So that's what I"m assuming. Heard this from MOC, seen on the forum, and heard from my Regional Commander. Hope this helps!
 
The terminology used in the regulation is Minimally Qualified. It sounds less onerous than 3Q'd, but basically means the same. Unfortunately USMA never defines to the public "Minimally Qualified".
This is the exact language from the requlation governing the USMA https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/32/575.3
For example, a principal nominee who is found minimally qualified must be offered an appointment.
 
DD received a 3Q Letter from USMA, then found out shortly thereafter she received a P-NOM from her MOC. We are extremely optimistic that this will result in an appointment, however we dare not break into the Happy Dance until it arrives, which seems to be late February to early March. The waiting is harder than completing the application packet.

I think hearing back will now depend on when your MOC submits his/her nominees to WP. Our MOC submitted his last year in late Dec. DS received appointment in mid-January. DS never heard directly that he was a PNom but we know our MOC utilizes the option. He could have very well been the slate winner as well. Good luck to your DD. The wait and all that is to come for her and you over the next year will be worth it...one word of caution...when the academic year begins the stress level ratches up a few notches....DS has one more final tomorrow(6th this week)and semester 1 will be in the books.

Triple qualified means meeting West Point's academic (Test scores, grades, etc), physical (CFA), and medical standards (DODMERB). Your MOC will usually notify ylu if you're their principal nominee. However, a majority of congressman don't use this method so it all depends on your district.
 
Is there a time frame / deadline for being 3Q'd? I know I am academically and physically qualified, but I had a shoulder injury during the football season, got surgery almost two months ago, and should be cleared for all activity (and thus hopefully receive a waiver) by late January to February. Can WP forgo a principal nominee if they are not qualified after a certain amount of time, and does this situation hurt my chances significantly?

Sure, if you are DQ from DoDMERB, they don't grant a waiver and you are done. No appointment. Have you had a DoDMERB determination? They can wait until the day you report for a qualification and a final appointment.

A better question is "would they". No one here can really answer that. But, think about it. A congressman said via a principal nomination "I want @wp0524 to go USMA". Do you really think the USMA wants to explain to a congressman, "sorry @wp0524 can't come". They will do it, but you better believe USMA will have a very good reason to deny a principal nomination.

If I recall correctly, April 15 is the deadline for any medical waiver to clear.

Did you get a "you are qualified notice" from DoDMERB before the injury? If yes, you are supposed to notify DoDMERB of any significant change in your medical condition.
 
@MemberLG I was injured in early August, before I had gone to DoDMERB. So no, I was never qualified.

@5Day I've not yet had a DoDMERB determination, as I only had surgery two months ago and am still in the recovery phase. I'm sending in the doctor's reports periodically. WP has requested that I provide all medical and surgical records. I am fully confident that I will recover completely, my only concern was that they would have moved on to another nominee by the time I reach full performance (again, most likely January - February).
 
@wp0524 it sound like USMA is doing everything they can to get you that appointment. They are probably looking for you doctor to say all healed and released for unrestricted physical activity.
