I sent all the PTR items a few weeks ago, which included the Navy Federal account form. Recently I have received emails from Navy Federal welcoming me and directing me to "sign up", etc. These automated emails/texts seem general and seem like a marketing thing. I was wondering if we (C/O '23) need to take any actions on this or if we will be setting up our accounts during Plebe Summer?

    Thanks

You can do it during plebe summer. There’ll be opportunity and instructions to do so. DD took about half her savings account to USNA and used it to start her NFCU account. That way, you’ll have your pay plus some extra.

    Okay, thanks!
So your DD took half her savings in cash?

My DS liquidated his account at home and sent a cashier's check to set up an account with Navy Federal, before I-Day. It's good to be able to write the account number down on the form, so that your pay gets direct-deposited from the start, but as @MidCakePa writes above, you can wait until I-Day to set up an account, if you want.
During Plebe Summer, you don't really need access to any money. Everything you need is taken out of your pay. At some point, they will let you go to the Mid Store, where you can get snacks or drinks. Before PPW, you will get to go to the Baysox game in your new summer dress whites and feel like actual humans. You may want some cash in your pocket there, for the concession stand.

No. Her bank cut her a check.

There are multiple branches in Annapolis. Our S opened his account at one of the branches the day before I-Day.

Would this be plausible. I set up my account during PS without bring any money beforehand, and have my parents wire my savings into my NFCU checking account once established?

If transfer some of my savings into my NFCU account, can I begin to use the card before I Day? Or should I not use it for personal use yet? Thank you!

Sure. It's a regular credit union account. Use away.

My DS sent the NFCU paperwork in and received a document in the mail that shows the pin for his debit card, however, we never received any other information in the mail. Has anyone else had this experience?

My DS had issues with Navy Federal at first (they wanted repeated proof that he was service-connected) so I just suggested that he to respond back with a terse EMail saying that he had already sent them proof the first two times, and if they were that lax with paperwork that they could just close his account and send his money back, because at this point he had no confidence in them.

That cleared everything up in short order, let me tell you.;)

Yes, it took some time for me as well to figure out how to open my account! He will need to find his access number, which you can do by googling "find Navy federal access number" and it will take you to a page to plug in some personal info. Plug it in and it will give you your access number, which acts as his username. The password is the last 4 digits of his access number and the last four digits of his SSN. It will log him in to his online bank account, but he should definitely change his username and password for something he can remember Hope this helps any confusion with the card!

Come to think of it, maybe it was an access number he received. There were no instructions, which seemed very odd. I will have him go online and do what you said. Thanks for the info.

If you wait and do it at one of the tents set up on the yard (by the mid Store...was not busy on the day we were there!!), you get a SWEET NFCU towel .

Actually they had incentives of a 25$ deposit in each of me and DH’s accounts for opening one. So we each got a towel, and $25.

I got the same PIN number thing. I'm just going to bring it on I Day.

Nobody at USNA needs your PIN. That should be held close to the chest.

They just need your account number so that they can electronically deposit your pay. You may or may not have different account numbers for Savings and Checking. Make sure that you give USNA the right number, or divert some of your pay to savings while most goes to checking.

OP, The information in the PTR that you sent in to NFCU already will set up your account and start your direct deposit for your Mid Pay. You shouldn't have to do anything else.

I got my debit card and set up my account online and on the NFCU app. I had all my savings wired to my account, and in fact, I already opened a CD!
