Good morning everyone,

I hope all of the incoming plebes are getting excited for the next chapter of their lives. Plebe Summer will be that hardest thing most of the plebes do up to this point in their lives. However, nothing you do during plebe summer is that challenging, but the aggregate of everything can get fatiguing. Bring a high energy level to plebe summer! The detailers will appreciate & respect the plebes who give it their all.

The hardest part of plebe summer is the first 2-weeks because their aren't many fun activities in the schedule. It's a lot of time in Bancroft with the detailers. After the first 2 weeks fun actives will start such as the following: Sports Periods, Sailing Lessons, the Endurance Course, Swim Lessons, a minor league baseball game, and more. Get through the first two weeks and you will be fine.

I would discourage plebes from faking medical injuries to get out of stuff. If you have a legitimate injury, by all means, SEEK HELP. But, if your injury isn't legitimate, your fellow plebes will know, and they will lose respect for you.

Your fellow plebes in your company will be your best friends for the rest of your life. Treat them well and be humble. No one care if you got into Harvard or were your Senior Class President. I have seen many plebes alienated by their classmates due to too much self-aggrandizing.

Give plebe summer your best effort and everything will work out great.

Shameless Plug: Ultimate Frisbee is the coolest club on the yard. We play in a lot of tournaments along the east coast from NC to NY. USNA's team was ranked 13th in the nation the last time college teams were ranked (before the pandemic). We take everyone regardless of experience. I encourage everyone to come to the 1st practice after plebe summer.

Feel free to ask me questions about anything

Helping a parent of a plebe-to-be in another thread - are you able to see an internal calendar with Reform date for Jan ‘22? I can’t find it on public-facing calendars. Thank you, good shipmate.

The master calendar currently only goes until August '21. The Spring Tentative Academic calendar says class starts on 11Jan22, so I would guess midshipmen would have to be back on 6Jan22 at 8pm. However, schedules have been changing a lot throughout the pandemic so its hard to say right now.

Should I ask my parents to bring my personal electronics during plebe parents weekend? I’d bring them back to Bancroft with me.

On PPW, can our parents bring us personal items to bring back to the yard? Like a blanket to be more precise :)

Yes and yes. Don’t haul that stuff around on I-Day. Have your folks bring it on PPW, when you know better what you really need and what’s allowed.

Should extra undershirts and compression shorts be mailed in the first care package rather than brought with on I-Day? I am trying to go light with only a drawstring bag, glasses case, phone, prescription goggles, and maybe 3 pairs of compression shorts. I want prefer not to haul around my extra undershirts and compression shorts.

Also, does the underwear you wear on I-Day matter or should you just wear one of your extra pair of compression shorts?

Bring all of the stuff you listed on I-Day.

The underwear you wear on I-Day does not matter. I like the idea of wearing one of your extra pair of compression shorts. I wore a pair of boxer briefs on I-Day that I took off in my room and never wore again.

Make sure you always where compression shorts to morning PT. Plebes that wear their issues tighty-whities to workouts are often given a hard time.

Yes, have your parents bring the extra things you want on I-Day. I have one stipulation: if you are going to bring an XBox or some other recreational device, I would recommend putting it in a box for more secrecy. I think the detailers would give you a hard time for carrying an XBox into Bancroft at the end of Parents Weekend.

Reminder!!! There are 4 days of Plebe Summer left after Parents Weekend.

Excellent gouge. Don’t give away all your detailer fun!

Leave hubris at the gate. Help your shipmates. Learn to fail at something and keep going.
As @Temple17 said, don’t be viewed as a chit surfer, but don’t fail to seek medical to avoid being on legit medical chit. It will become an exacerbated problem and chase you through the academic year. You’ve got this ‘25. Now hug your mom and dad and get some sleep.

And I just realized I wasn’t really doing the Q and A the OP set up. I was just weighing in. My apologies.

Thank you so much. Just to be clear, bring my extra compression shorts AND undershirts with me on I-Day?

Also, is it possible to arrive too early prior to your report time. Say you report at 1100 and you show up to Gate 8 at 1000-1015, will they let you through?

This deserves emphasis. If you have an actual injury, you need to speak up and get seen by Medical or its only going to get worse. Too many times I have seen plebes try to push through serious injuries because their pride and ego got in the way of seeking treatment. The problem is, it often just gets worse and then what could have been treated with some rest, stretching, and ice progresses into a surgical case in the Fall, and guess what, now you’re missing even more plebe activities.

That said, there’s definitely a difference between pain and injury, and if it’s the former then you’ll just need to suck it up. Plebe Summer is uncomfortable by design but always remember it’s temporary.

Yes.
The times are staggered in an attempt to regulate the intake and flow. That said, if the line is running fast, and you’re standing near the doors, you may well get sucked in. Otherwise, I recommend arriving in the line area 15 minutes before your assigned time. That’s respectably early, and if they are ready for you, they’ll take you.
