Hello! My son made his list of 7 schools on his ROTC application. What happens if he did not apply to all of them yet? Can he wait to hear about the ROTC scholarship first? Also, if he was lucky enough to receive a scholarship, is he offered it only at certain schools?

Thanks!

Which branch? AFROTC you take the scholarship to which school you want that has a detachment. Navy and Army assign it to a listed school, I believe Army lists a couple choices you can take it to, but recently Navy was trying to assign to your top choice school, so you have to jump through more hoops to re-assign if you don't get into the selected school. But no, you don't have to have an acceptance to the school prior to submitting the ROTC applications.

Because you say 7, I assume it is AROTC. if selected for scholarship, the award will identify 1 to 3 schools where the scholarship applies. You have to accept the scholarship at one of those schools. If you want to go somewhere other than one of the schools where the award is, you have to request a transfer from Cadet Command, which are usually, but not always, granted. You can even transfer to a school that wasn't on the original list of 7.

However, I do question how your DS will apply and be accepted to a school after the scholarship announcement. Haven't most application deadlines passed?

My son submitted his NROTC application in early fall and hadn’t even applied yet to the schools on his list. That’s pretty normal. The scholarship is placed at the first school on the list where there is room, starting at the top and going down — and is independent of the admissions process. In the end he just took the advice to rank the schools in the order he wanted to attend them.

On the admissions side, even schools with rolling deadlines often have early action type deadlines in/around October and also have specific deadlines for students to be considered for scholarships or financial aid - usually Jan 15th. What that means is that a huge number of the applications have already been submitted. So he should get his apps in ASAP or they’ll start running out of room. It’s only “rolling” til they run out of spots!

Offers are usually made to some of the schools on the list. Usually 3ish…I have never seen offers to all seven. I would suggest you have your applicant open up the website, go to the additional information tab and read the link about accepting offers and the transfer process. It’s all spelled out right in the application website.
