Question about traveling home

Another suggestion... you really don't need much as a Cadet. If you know what airline you plan to use and people ask about graduation and Christmas gifts you can always ask for gift cards for the airline you plan to use. This can be really helpful in offsetting those costs. I also was able to get a Credit Card my sophomore year from Navy Fed that had a $500 limit. I would usually book my flights with this and pay it off immediately or over 2-3 months. Sometimes my parents pitched in and helped. It helped build my credit and gave me an emergency card in case something happened without going nuts.

That's really good advice! I appreciate it

Depending on what part of Alabama is home, Frontier Airlines flies out of Denver to New Orleans. We're in the Florida panhandle, and it was a bit of a drive each way, but we saved a lot of money (they charge you for everything, but if your civvies are at home anyway, you won't have to pack much). Plus, if you get close enough to home, maybe someone will drive out and pick you up and the airport!

You'll be done by 1645 at the latest on the last day before break. The calender for next school year should already be posted, so if you want to go ahead and start planning, feel free. It's a little over an hour to get to the Denver airport from usafa, and about 30 minutes to Colorado Springs airport. The shuttle will take you there for $45 round trip to Denver, and $30 round trip to C-Springs.

Thank you for this info nolifepilot!
Do you know when and how often does shuttle to Denver airport goes?

It runs a few times on the days of departure/arrival from academic year leave. Note that it doesn't run for long weekends or any other time you might want to go home (Columbus Day, President's Day, after finals week, summer leave), so your best bet for those times is always a sponsor family or other cadets you may know heading to the airport.

^The only note I have there is that Frontier doesn't recognize precheck and I know cadets have had mixed luck recently using just their military ID to get precheck.

DEN is a zoo during holidays. I can only imagine how the precheck line is when you throw several thousand cadets in the queue.

It hasn't looked too bad from what I've seen, but they've stopped letting cadets go through it unless they have precheck stamped on their boarding pass. That thins it out considerably.

That's how I've found it works elsewhere. Traveling to SERE back in December there were a couple of us that added our KTN to DTS/plane reservation and had precheck and several that didn't. Even though we were all traveling with mil IDs, only confirmed precheck tickets got the slight convenience of the precheck line.

That is how I understand it to work. When you make your reservations for flight add your KTN to the plane reservation and you should be good to go. You can't just walk up and show your ID and get Pre Check.

Also, don't some airlines check your bags for free if you are in uniform?
Every airline I've flown with (Delta, United, American, and Southwest) has checked my bags for free with just a CAC Card. It is a very generous perk!

After they returned to USAFA following Recognition, my sons never took the van. Sometimes, they'd made arrangements with an upperclassman to give them a ride. But usually, they'd just look around at DIA until they saw a cadet-type with car keys. Drove ME crazy (but those two have had that tendency of long standing), but they were never late.

Once, twin B got bumped to 1st class and sat next to a colonel who'd gone to USAFA back in the day (when it was hard). They chatted, colonel gave son a ride and took him out for a steak dinner. Remember to do that when YOU are a colonel.

How hard is it to get leave to go to an away game as a freshmen? This year Air Force plays a college pretty close to where I live and my brother goes there.

Hopefull, make sure you ask that during BCT. Make you really popular with cadre.

Now, now..I think hopefull is just curious.
