Questions about applying to USNA

On the social media side, would not having any social media accounts benefit me or would it retract from an application?
I can only speak to what I experienced. Our son applied to NROTC, Norwich and USNA, USMA, USMMA and USAFA. He has a twitter account, FB (for older family like mom), instagram and snapchat. He knew in 6th grade he wanted this so he has not put anything on social media he wouldn't want me, teachers he respects, an officer or a potential interviewer to see. He didn't want to jeopardize his future so he separated from peers who party, vape and make otherwise poor decisions in 8th grade so there was no risk of incriminating pictures or posts. It worked out well for him. He was offered several opportunities due to hard work and he chose USNA.

Since my son joined NROTC in 2011, he has never posted to FB. Not once.

Our son and I have talked about what he would/would not post once he takes the oath. Definitely a shift coming.

Found this sage advice from @Capt MJ on a thread from earlier this year. LINK.

Scrubbing social media accounts and watching very closely what you post will serve you well for all the reasons listed above, including the fact that Plebe Summer detailers occasionally delve into social media accounts to see what might be useful during Plebe Summer. It's probably not the notoriety you're looking for. Be sure to read the links in Capt MJ's post on Mars Boy for an example from USAFA.

Hometown story + interesting quote about Mars > found by USAFA cadre > “Mars boy” starts > featured in cnet.com story and countless other places > lives on, just google “USAFA Mars boy”

Oregon kicked a kid off the football team for past social media offenses yesterday. According to my older son, there are a very large number of people being called out and identified on Instagram yesterday and today.

Additionally, my DS said that when he signed forms at an admissions event for USNA that he was asked to provide his social media accounts.

Stick to the majority advice here - post nothing that could bring you shame if your grandma saw it
