Questions Thread

I have heard the word BEAST a lot. What is BEAST?

BEAST = BOOT CAMP - R (Reception)Day in June to A (Acceptance) Day in August. The longest weeks in my sons life..........lolo.

In his words............"I have seen and done things I never thought I would and smelled in ways no human should". Kinda poetic and sums up Beast nicely!!!

:shake:

I really don't look that skinny. I weigh ~138 but I can max bench press around 210lbs. I definitely have muscle I just weigh light I guess because I exercise literally everyday.

But yeah I agree with your statement. My girlfriend's mother is a dietitian and told me the same thing. I eat plenty of carbs now haha.

But anyways does anyone know if I'm likely to lose weight at Beast or gain weight in muscle?

Depends on your body fat percentage. Going through beast will eliminate much of your body fat, so you'll lose weight if you have a lot. Although you'll gain weight by building muscle at the same time, every Plebe I've talked to told me they lost weight.

For me right now, I'm focusing on increasing my fitness level. As for specific diet/weight control, I'm letting West Point take care of that in 5 months :thumb:

My son started beast at approx 170, and dropped to around 150 during Beast. He's now at 155, 5'7" and around 15% BMI.

He was a Varsity athlete in soccer and lacrosse during high school, and quite fit. He has turned into quite a runner at WP, and was in the fastest group during beast. He was ready for Beast, but got only better during the summer. He said running up the hills was tough, but really imporved his running.

Something to be aware of with the weight fluctuations. Your weight at the start of Beast will be noted, and may influence what company sports activites you will participate in. My son got assigned wrestling in the 170lb weight class during the first semester. He had never wrestled before, and at the start of the semester was at approx 150. It was tough for him being a wrestling novice, and wrestling the other 170 pounders. He dislocated his shoulder twice while wrestling, and he had never had that type of injury before. This put a damper on his participation in physical activities in the latter part of the semester, and affected his IOCT grade. He also had to defer some of the phys-ed classes to the next semester.

His advice, get fit before Beast, and be prepared for the toughest workout you'll likely ever do. It would be great if you were at the optimum weight at the start of Beast. He has focused on his running and working out in the weight room to keep his muscle mass at the right ratio.

He lamented that he slacked off during winter break, and it took a few days to get back into the swing of things. He won't be repeating that again.

Your introduction to West Point after you leave Mom and Dad and all that you knew as normal. The most intense summer of your life after which you'll will never be the same.........but in a good way. I'm sure others will have more details

I'll let them fill you in:thumb:

Okay thank you.

For the current cadets, I take a few supplements when I work out, including creatine and whey protein, as well as a pre-workout supplement. Obviously I won't be able to use any of these during Beast, but am I able to use them during the academic school year, when I go weight lifting?

Federal Code for USMA

I'm trying to fill out the PCQ for USMA but I can't find the federal code for USMA, can anyone help me?

You can spend money on post at the cadet store or the PX. You can try to spend it in Highland Falls, but there is not much there! You cannot go to NYC unless on a pass until your second year (yearling). Many cadets have "authorization to leave post." You want this!! You get it from being involved in some activity that requires you to go someplace. Those with "authos" find places to spend money.

The cadets I know from MI go home for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Break. Most 3 day weekends (if you have a pass) are spent with buddies who live near USMA. Your first off weekend (Labor Day) will likely be in NYC...many cadets do that because it's close and easy to navigate via the train.
when cadets go off post ,for example NYC, do they wear uniforms or civvies? I know plebes have limited civilian clothes, but what about yearlings and up?

so your son got "assigned" wrestling for company sports in the first semester? you don't pick what sport you want?

When you are on "pass" you can wear what you want. When you have OPP (off post privileges) as a yearling, you wear khakis and a USMA polo. I am not certain, but I think the same is for cows. Firsties wear what they want, I think. Those who know for sure, please feel free to correct me.

Another factor would be the year...for example, plebes get to wear the khakis and polos after President's Day weekend because of the bowl victory.

In my son's company, he was assigned.

Also, to the other question, this year for the first time, plebes were allowed to start their travel on pass away from WP in civilian clothes.

As of now, all classes are authorized civilian clothes when leaving on pass or OPPs.

As with everything in the Army: you put in preferences and then get placed where you are needed. It is impossible for everyone to get their first choice due to the popularity of some sports. Being a Plebe also doesn't exactly help you get a first pick either. It depends on how the company assigns IMs (first come first serve, class quota, etc) and what everyone in that company is interested in.

They made a change so this year everyone gets civilian clothes when leaving campus (pass and OPP) unless on trip section. They have to be in accordance with SOP (collared shirt, hole-free jeans, etc).

Where did you hear Plebes get to wear cadet casual? All I heard was they get fallout and OPP. Not sure if their OPP are restricted to having to wear cadet casual since they are Plebes or if they fall under the current general rule of civilian clothes for OPP.

Haha. I love the weight questions. (This is coming from a 8 year wrestler).

Cutting weight for wrestling= Not eating, wearing plastic to run/sit next to a heater. Its awful. Not fun:thumbdown::unhappy:

Getting bigger in the offseason: Lift, eat and drink protein, lift some more and run. Sleep too. You need sleep to rebuild muscle.
Carbs are not going to get you much bigger. They will get you chunkier. You need carbs, no doubt, but too much will not be good.

Have a balanced meal plan of proteins/carbs/fats. Add more protein via shakes after lifting. For meals have some carbs, and always some protein like chicken or beef.

For protein shakes, I use PowerBar powder.

AF: thanks for the corrections; it appears I am a bundle of misinformation tonight!

A LOT of cadets use these type of supplements (I myself use Mass XXX). You may use them during the academic year; you just have to stow them away during SAMI. There's a GNC at the PX and at the CVS in town.

During my Cadet's Plebe year SHE was inadvertently put on the football team for her sport. It was interesting, and fortunately she had a sense of humor about it. At that time she didn't really know who to talk to or how to go about getting her sport changed, so she showed up for practice. She actually practiced for a week or so (she was a wide receiver) before someone decided she should probably do something else. Wish I had gotten to see her play.

Well, not the first time. Just the first time recently. 10 years ago we all left in civvies regardless of rank.

So now that the additional forms for accepted applicants are posted and I want to get those in ASAP, I have another question. It says that all the things are to be sent in pre-postmarked gray envelopes. Are those the same ones we received some time ago (or I did, way back in the summer if I remember correctly), or are we going to be sent more? I thought I remembered hearing awhile ago that more would be sent, but I'm not 100% sure.

Plus, mine are addressed to an address in my region specifically (Great Lakes). Is this where the forms are supposed to be sent? Also, I have 5 envelopes left and 6 forms to be sent. Can more than one form be sent per envelope if at all possible? (I guess that would be a non-issue if more envelopes are going to be sent to us).

Sorry for all the questions, just looking for some clarification before I do anything wrong!

Thanks!

tiki-- you can call up admissions and they'll send you more gray envelopes if you need them. I am not sure if they automatically send appointees more gray envelopes but if you want to get it done ASAP and be proactive then just ask for more.

Parent planning for plebe year

I'm trying to determine what days would be the best to plan to be up at West point to support my son (and actually get to see him, give him as much of a break as possible). I live in Pittsburgh.

I'm planning to drop him off on R-day, be there for A-day weekend, get him home for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Of the other holidays (Labor Day, Veteran's Day, etc.) is one or two any better than the others? I've seen where he'll get one pass a semester (around Veteran's day)? Can I get him out of town on any of those days?
